CONGRESSMAN TED LIEU RESPONDS TO DONALD TRUMP’S COMMENTS ABOUT GOLD STAR FAMILY

Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-CA33) issued the following statement in response to Donald Trump’s recent disparaging comments about Khizr and Ghazala Khan, Gold Star parents of U.S. Army Capt. Humayun Khan. On the last night of the Democratic National Convention, Khizr Khan, his wife Ghazala by his side, recounted to the crowd how his son was killed in 2004 by a car bomb in Iraq. Mr. Lieu spoke at the convention immediately following Mr. Khan and had the opportunity to briefly meet him and his wife after their powerful speech.

“Slandering a mom and dad who lost their son in service of our country is a new low even for Donald Trump. Having served on active duty in the US military, and as a Colonel in the Reserves, it is difficult for me to watch the Republican nominee continue to bring down America and our good people. I will continue to pray for Trump’s dark, dark soul full of hatred and contempt.

What is more surprising is that Speaker Paul Ryan continues to stand by Donald Trump. Having served with Speaker Ryan, I know that in his heart he does not share Donald Trump’s hatred, racism, or sexism. I call upon Speaker Ryan to do what his heart has been telling him all along and withdraw his endorsement of Donald Trump.”
