Over twenty organizations and hundreds of supporters will gather in front of the State Capitol to rally against Assembly Bill 1726 and to call for Governor Brown to veto the bill, should it reach his desk.

AB 1726 threatens to violate the California Constitution as amended by Proposition 209. Proposition 209 (also known as the California Civil Rights Initiative or CCRI) approved by voters in November of 1996, amended the state constitution to prohibit state governmental institutions from considering race, sex, or ethnicity, specifically in the areas of public employment, public contracting and public education.

The Asian American community is very concerned that AB 1726 will re-open the door on efforts to amend or infringe upon Proposition 209.  There is no detailed explanation for what this data will be used for. US history is full of examples in which Asian people have been wrongly discriminated against.  Because this bill only names Asian Pacific Islander people, it is natural to assume that the intent is to fix or change something relating to one race only.  While the bill may be well intended, it is likely to open a Pandora’s Box of race-based discriminatory practices in the future.

Legislators from both the Senate and Assembly, Speakers from American Civil Rights Coalition (ACRC), Silicon Valley Chinese Association (SVCA), Chinese American Equalization Association (HQH) and many other community leaders will deliver comments on this bill.

At the event, supporters will sign petitions to urge Governor Jerry Brown to veto the bill.

Please join us in expressing our community’s resolve to oppose AB1726.
