L.A. MAYOR ERIC GARCETTI ENDORSES MIKE ENG FOR STATE SENATE

EL MONTE, CA  — Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti today announced his support for State Senate candidate Mike Eng, a longtime educator, attorney and public servant. Eng, a Democrat, is running to succeed Senator Ed Hernandez in the San Gabriel Valley’s 22nd District.

In announcing his endorsement, Mayor Garcetti stated “I support Mike Eng for State Senate because he stands up for Democratic values. He is an effective champion for schools and affordable college. He is an innovative leader in creating local jobs and economic opportunities. He courageously stands up to the polluters and special interests. And Mike Eng is an important partner in our efforts to end homelessness. I’m proud to join the Democratic Party, Congressmembers Judy Chu and Grace Napolitano, Supervisor Hilda Solis and local firefighters in support of Mike Eng for State Senate. Please vote for Mike Eng on Tuesday, June 5th.”

Eng is opposed by Independent Expenditure committees who have spent more than $1 million on behalf of his opponent. About half of the expenditures — $548,000+ as of May 30 — are from oil company-funded PACs with deceptive names such as “Coalition to Restore California’s Middle Class” and “Californians for Jobs and a Strong Economy.” Chevron and Phillips 66 have contributed over $5 million to these PACs in the last few years.

Mike’s campaign for State Senate has gathered a huge amount of momentum lately with major endorsements from organizations including the California National Organization for Women, California Federation of Labor, the California Democratic Party, and the vast majority of local elected officials from communities within the 22nd State Senate District.  All of the best-known District leaders – including incumbent Senator Ed Hernandez, Supervisors Hilda Solis and Kathryn Barger, Congressmembers Judy Chu and Grace Napolitano and Assemblymember Ed Chau – are supporting Mike.

Mike Eng previously served in the State Assembly, on the L.A. Community College District Board of Trustees, and on the Monterey Park City Council.
