{"id":12415,"date":"2018-11-28T13:16:53","date_gmt":"2018-11-28T21:16:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=12415"},"modified":"2018-11-28T22:17:17","modified_gmt":"2018-11-29T06:17:17","slug":"new-zealand-bars-chinese-firm-huawei-on-national-security-fears","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=12415","title":{"rendered":"New Zealand bars Chinese firm Huawei on national security fears"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New Zealand\u2019s security services have blocked China\u2019s\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/huawei\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Huawei<\/a>\u00a0from supplying mobile network kit to a domestic company on national security grounds, in the latest blow for the world\u2019s largest telecoms equipment firm.<\/p>\n<p>Spark\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/newzealand\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">New Zealand<\/a>\u00a0said in a statement on Wednesday it was not able to use Huawei\u2019s equipment in its 5G mobile network towers after intervention from New Zealand\u2019s Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB).<\/p>\n<p>Andrew Hampton, director-general of the GCSB, said in a separate statement that \u201ca significant network security risk was identified\u201d by the agency when it examined Spark\u2019s plans.<\/p>\n<p>Huawei supplies network equipment to all of Europe\u2019s major mobile network providers, including companies such as Vodafone and BT in the UK. In February Huawei announced it would spend \u00a33bn in the UK over the next five years.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"element element-rich-link element--thumbnail element-rich-link--upgraded\" data-component=\"rich-link\" data-link-name=\"rich-link-1 | 1\">\n<div class=\"rich-link tone-news--item rich-link--pillar-news\">\n<div class=\"rich-link__container\">\n<div class=\"rich-link__image-container u-responsive-ratio\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/7f245c89ec53e570c5ef82d10559b399d67267ea\/0_55_2393_1436\/master\/2393.jpg?width=460&amp;quality=85&amp;auto=format&amp;fit=max&amp;s=434f66316f96596d6a83d1d440770413\" \/><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"rich-link__header\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"rich-link__read-more\">\n<div class=\"rich-link__read-more-text\">However, Huawei, which has its headquarters in Shenzhen, in southern China, has faced national security concerns in multiple countries. In the UK, a monitoring operation has been set up to\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2016\/aug\/07\/china-huwaei-cell-uk-national-security-cyber-surveillance-hacking\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">check Huawei\u2019s equipment for security flaws<\/a>, while in July a British government report said it could give only \u201climited assurance\u201d that Huawei equipment did not compromise national security.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>GCSB\u2019s decision follows a similar move by the US, where president Donald Trump in August\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/115th-congress\/house-bill\/5515\/text\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">signed into law<\/a>\u00a0a ban on any of the government\u2019s executive agencies using Huawei\u2019s technology. The US has also started lobbying allies to forgo Huawei equipment, amid the broader trade war with China, according to the Wall Street Journal.<\/p>\n<p>Australia also raised objections to the use of Huawei equipment for its new 5G mobile network infrastructure. The\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2018\/aug\/27\/marise-payne-defends-5g-ban-on-chinese-telcos-huawei-and-zte\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Chinese government publicly objected<\/a>\u00a0to the Australian move.<\/p>\n<p>Under New Zealand law telecoms companies must inform security services of certain changes to their networks. It has not yet been able to review the agency\u2019s reasoning for blocking the use of Huawei\u2019s equipment.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Huawei in New Zealand said: \u201cHuawei is aware of Spark\u2019s statement, and we are looking into the situation. We will actively address any concerns and work together to find a way forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a leading global supplier of telecoms equipment, we remain committed to developing trusted and secure solutions for our customers.
