Childish Gambino\u2019s \u201cThis Is America\u201d won Song of the Year at the Grammy Awards on Sunday, marking the first time a rap song has won the category.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The song beat out megahits including \u201cShallow\u201d by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, \u201cIn My Blood\u201d by Shawn Mendes, \u201cThe Joke\u201d by Brandi Carlile, \u201cGod\u2019s Plan\u201d by Drake and \u201cAll The Stars\u201d by Kendrick Lamar and SZA.<\/p>\n

Donald Glover, the musician and actor who performs as Childish Gambino, won the award with co-writer and \u201cBlack Panther\u201d composer Ludwig G\u00f6ransson.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThis song speaks to so many people. It talks about injustice, it celebrates life and unites people at the same time,\u201d G\u00f6ransson said backstage after the win. \u201cI feel like this song really shook the world, and it\u2019s something you can\u2019t really shake off.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Glover, 35, did not attend the awards show. He previously turned down an offer to perform, as did Kendrick Lamar and Drake \u2013 a move many Grammy watchers interpreted as commentary on the show\u2019s history of passing over hip hop artists in the top categories.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

G\u00f6ransson said he didn\u2019t know where Glover was but planned to reach out to him after the show.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI haven\u2019t talked to him yet, but I\u2019m going to call him,\u201d G\u00f6ransson told reporters backstage.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

It\u2019s the 60th anniversary of song of the year category, which recognizes songwriting.(as opposed to record of the year, which honors the best overall recording). This year\u2019s field of eight nominees made the competition the most crowded one in the prestigious category\u2019s history.<\/p>\n
