A blockchain allows for rules to be enforced on a computer system. The most popular example of a rule that a cryptocurrency enforces is that money can’t be spent twice, or double spent. Incentives are such that no one actor can break the rules without sustaining a significant cost. In fact, an attacker most likely could gain by enforcing the rules instead of breaking them. In game theory, we say that a blockchain operates at a Nash equilibrium.
