{"id":19348,"date":"2019-10-02T16:30:22","date_gmt":"2019-10-02T23:30:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=19348"},"modified":"2019-10-02T16:30:22","modified_gmt":"2019-10-02T23:30:22","slug":"the-pentagon-has-created-a-new-office-solely-focused-on-china","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=19348","title":{"rendered":"The Pentagon has created a new office solely focused on China"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\" mco-body-item mco-body-type-text\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.defense.gov\/2019\/Jul\/23\/2002161081\/825\/780\/0\/190723-D-ZZ999-031.JPG\" alt=\"Image result for Chad Sbragia\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 Since the release of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/breaking-news\/2018\/01\/19\/national-defense-strategy-released-with-clear-priority-stay-ahead-of-russia-and-china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Defense Strategy<\/a>\u00a0in early 2018, top Pentagon officials have stressed that the department needs to keep its focus on the long-term challenge from China. Now, with the creation of a new office focused solely on China, officials in the department hope to take a major step forward in that effort.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\" mco-body-item mco-body-type-text\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">In June, the Department of Defense discreetly created a new job: the deputy assistant secretary of defense for China. Deputy assistant secretaries of defense, or DASD, serve as civilian subject matter experts, three levels down from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2017\/10\/04\/one-hand-tied-behind-your-back-why-dods-empty-policy-chair-matters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">undersecretary of defense for policy<\/a>, traditionally one of the most powerful positions in the Pentagon. The new job, according to a department statement, will serve as \u201cprincipal advisor to the Secretary of Defense on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/asia-pacific\/2019\/08\/19\/china-grown-strong-enough-for-a-surprise-move-in-the-indo-pacific-think-tank-warns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">all things China<\/a>\u00a0and will be the single hub for policy and strategy development, oversight, authorities review, and national-level interagency integration to align the Department\u2019s efforts on China.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\" mco-body-item mco-body-type-text\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">On Tuesday,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2017\/04\/05\/schriver-emerges-as-potential-pentagon-policy-nominee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Randall Schriver<\/a>, the assistant secretary of defense for Asian and Pacific security affairs, told Defense News that the new position is something he has considered for some time.
