{"id":20381,"date":"2019-11-21T18:05:34","date_gmt":"2019-11-22T02:05:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=20381"},"modified":"2019-11-21T18:05:34","modified_gmt":"2019-11-22T02:05:34","slug":"senators-scrutinize-self-driving-car-safety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=20381","title":{"rendered":"Senators scrutinize self-driving car safety"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Senators on Wednesday grilled the nation&#8217;s top transportation safety regulators over their efforts to approve rules for the growing self-driving car industry.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the immense promise of automated vehicles (AVs), which the lawmakers on the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee acknowledged, the technology has been plagued by accidents during testing.<\/p>\n<p>Committee Chairman Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) praised the new technology, which he said &#8220;has the ability to save thousands of lives&#8221; that would be lost in traffic accidents and provide &#8220;new found independence&#8221; for the elderly and people with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Gary Peters (D-Mich.), who has introduced federal legislation on self-driving car safety, pressed regulators to show urgency over the issue.<\/p>\n<p>A &#8220;public safety risk, in the absence of clear federal rules, or a federal statutory framework, to guide safe deployment and testing exists now and we need to close that gap as quickly as possible,&#8221; Peters said.<\/p>\n<p>Much of the hearing also highlighted divisions between regulators and the watchdog tasked with investigating transportation accidents.<\/p>\n<p>National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Chairman Robert Sumwalt cited a report from his agency calling for a tougher review process before companies are allowed to test self-driving vehicles on the road.<\/p>\n<p>Sumwalt said the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which approved self-driving tests, was too lax and needed to force autonomous vehicle developers to prepare and submit a safety review.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Senators on Wednesday grilled the nation&#8217;s&#46;&#46;&#46;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[11,7],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-20381","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-business","category-u-s-a"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/20381","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=20381"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/20381\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":20382,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/20381\/revisions\/20382"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=20381"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=20381"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=20381"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
