The USC Libraries on Saturday celebrated the year’s best adaptations from literary materials.<\/h2>\n

Little Women<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Fleabag<\/em>\u00a0on Saturday night took top honors at the 32nd annual USC Libraries Scripter Awards, which are bestowed upon the best printed-word-to-film adaptations. Both authors and screenwriters were celebrated, as is custom at the awards ceremony, which was held at the Edward L. Doheny Jr. Memorial Library in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

In the film category,\u00a0Little Women<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(based on the novel of the same name by Louisa May Alcott) prevailed over fellow finalists\u00a0Dark Waters<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(based on the\u00a0New York Times Magazine<\/em>\u00a0article “The Lawyer Who Became DuPont\u2019s Worst Nightmare” by Nathaniel Rich);\u00a0The Irishman<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(based on the nonfiction work\u00a0I Heard You Paint Houses<\/em>\u00a0by Charles Brandt);\u00a0JoJo Rabbit<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(based on the novel\u00a0Caging Skies<\/em>\u00a0by Christine Leunens); and\u00a0The Two Popes<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(based on Anthony McCarten’s play\u00a0The Pope<\/em>).<\/p>\n

In the TV category, Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s\u00a0Fleabag<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(based on her one-woman play of the same name) beat out Joel Fields\u00a0and Steven Levenson\u00a0for the episode “Nowadays” from\u00a0Fosse\/Verdon<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(based on the biography\u00a0Fosse<\/em>\u00a0by\u00a0Sam Wasson); Emerald Fennell\u00a0for the episode “Nice and Neat” from\u00a0Killing Eve\u00a0<\/em><\/a>(based on the novel\u00a0Codename Villanelle<\/em>\u00a0by\u00a0Luke Jennings); Susannah Grant,\u00a0Michael Chabon\u00a0and\u00a0Ayelet Waldman\u00a0for the first episode of\u00a0Unbelievable<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(based on the article “An Unbelievable Story of Rape” by\u00a0T. Christian Miller\u00a0and\u00a0Ken Armstrong); and Damon Lindelof\u00a0and\u00a0Cord Jefferson\u00a0for the episode “This Extraordinary Being” from\u00a0Watchmen\u00a0<\/em><\/a>(based on the comic book series by\u00a0Alan Moore\u00a0and\u00a0Dave Gibbons).<\/p>\n

Started in 1988, the Scripter Awards are given by the USC Library Board of Councilors and are chosen by a committee of Writers Guild of America members; Academy Award-winning and -nominated screenwriters; industry executives; authors; faculty members; and some members of the Friends of the USC Libraries.<\/p>\n
