{"id":21477,"date":"2020-01-31T14:24:44","date_gmt":"2020-01-31T22:24:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=21477"},"modified":"2020-01-31T14:24:44","modified_gmt":"2020-01-31T22:24:44","slug":"thorburn-files-complaint-against-ken-williams-for-repeated-violations-of-campaign-finance-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=21477","title":{"rendered":"THORBURN FILES COMPLAINT AGAINST KEN WILLIAMS FOR REPEATED VIOLATIONS OF CAMPAIGN FINANCE LAW"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif; font-size: large;\">Andy Thorburn Files A Complaint Highlighting Ken Williams\u2019\u00a0Failure to Comply with FPPC Rules on Financial Reporting<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\"><strong>ORANGE COUNTY, CA<\/strong>\u00a0&#8212;\u00a0<\/span>Today, former classroom teacher Andy Thorburn\u2019s campaign for Orange County Board of Education District 3 issued a complaint to the FPPC calling for an investigation into Board Member Ken Williams\u2019\u00a0repeated failure to comply with the California Fair Political Practices Commission\u2019s financial disclosure rules.<\/p>\n<p>Despite being required to file his Form 460 reports by the required deadline, Williams has failed to do so multiple times, for both the 12\/31 and 1\/18 reporting periods. Neglecting to do so is a clear violation of California\u2019s Political Reform Act.<\/p>\n<p>An excerpt of the complaint can be viewed below:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Williams\u2019 failure to submit on time such significant information is a serious violation of FPPC rules, and more importantly, deprives the public and the press of the ability to evaluate his sources of fundraising and any potential conflicts of interest that may arise. Therefore, we are requesting that the Committee review Mr. Williams\u2019 repeated failure to submit a Form 460 on time, and issue an appropriate resolution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\">Andy\u00a0Thorburn\u00a0is a former classroom teacher, workers&#8217; rights advocate and successful businessman who is running to represent the Orange County Board of Education&#8217;s 3rd District. He has worked as an educator and entrepreneur, and at each phase in his life, he has prioritized the principle that any organization &#8211; a county or a company &#8211; gets the best results if it treats its people fairly, with dignity, and holds itself to a standard of excellence.<\/p>\n<p>After college,\u00a0Thorburn\u00a0started his career in public service as a high school teacher in Newark, New Jersey. His leadership abilities were recognized almost immediately, and he was elected to a senior position in the local chapter of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). Also while teaching,\u00a0Thorburn attended graduate school at Jersey City University.\u00a0Thorburn\u00a0also later served on the boards of the local United Family Agency, an organization from which he adopted his children, and the local YMCA.<\/p>\n<p>After leaving the classroom,\u00a0Thorburn\u00a0founded a small business that specialized in selling insurance to working families, particularly classroom teachers. This launched a truly remarkable career in business and philanthropy that has led to him creating hundreds of jobs and providing retirement security to countless Americans at home and abroad.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, Thorburn led the international company Global Benefits Group. He is also the founder of Contemporary Policy Institute &#8211; a nonprofit that focuses on educating the public about the facts surrounding key issues affecting our country today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif;\">Thorburn\u00a0has also been very active in community service organizations, including his current role on the Board of the Community Action Fund at the local Planned Parenthood chapter and the Executive Board of the Huntington Disease Taskforce. He had previously been active at Rotary International.<\/p>\n<p>Thorburn has begun the process of building a broad coalition of students, educators, parents, and local elected officials, all of whom share his vision of providing a comprehensive public education to every student in Orange County.<\/p>\n<p>Thorburn\u00a0has been married to his wife Karen for 36 years, and they have two children together.
