Health officials on Monday confirmed four additional deaths from the coronavirus in Washington state, bringing the state’s total death toll to six.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

There are 18 confirmed cases in Washington, including the six deaths.<\/p>\n

Most of those who have died were elderly or had underlying health conditions.<\/div>\n

\u201cUnfortunately, we are starting to find more COVID-19 cases here in Washington that appear to be acquired locally,\u201d said Dr. Kathy Lofy, a health officer for the\u00a0Washington State Department of Health.<\/div>\n

All of the cases are in\u00a0King and Snohomish counties, but Lofy said the virus could be spreading in other areas of the state, too. The state is ramping up its testing to better understand how widespread the virus is in Washington.<\/div>\n

But researchers think it has been spreading there for weeks, potentially infecting hundreds of people.<\/div>\n

Washington Gov.\u00a0Jay Inslee<\/a><\/span>\u00a0(D) declared a state of emergency Saturday, directing state agencies to use all resources necessary to prepare for and respond to an outbreak.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Of the six deaths, four had been residents of a nursing home, illustrating the danger the disease poses to those who are elderly or have underlying health conditions.<\/div>\n

Officials noted that the vast majority of people who get infected will fully recover.<\/div>\n

Nationwide, 96 cases\u00a0have been confirmed,\u00a0including in individuals who have been repatriated from the Diamond Princess cruise ship.<\/p>\n

Some patients haven’t had known contact with the virus and haven’t been traveling to countries where there are outbreaks, leading officials to believe it is spreading within communities.<\/p>\n

There have been nearly 89,000 cases of the coronavirus globally, including more than 8,700 outside of China, where it was first detected.<\/p>\n

The virus has hit 64 countries and the World Health Organization (WHO) considers the global risk of the virus to be “very high.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
