{"id":22669,"date":"2020-03-09T17:13:15","date_gmt":"2020-03-10T00:13:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=22669"},"modified":"2020-03-09T22:14:56","modified_gmt":"2020-03-10T05:14:56","slug":"all-of-italy-is-being-placed-on-lockdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=22669","title":{"rendered":"All of Italy is being placed on lockdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Italian government has announced extraordinary measures to contain the coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte on Monday declared the entire country a &#8220;red zone,&#8221; meaning people should stay home except for work and emergencies.<\/p>\n<p>The move expands the emergency measures already in place in northern Italy, which is where most of the more than 9,000 confirmed cases are.<\/p>\n<p>As of Monday, 463 coronavirus-related deaths have been reported through the country.<\/p>\n<p>In a televised address, Conte said that the rising number of cases and people being hospitalized required introducing even more drastic measures than those taken over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>By Sunday, nearly a quarter of Italy&#8217;s population had been placed on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/03\/08\/813396080\/coronavirus-italy-orders-massive-shutdown-amid-spread\">lockdown<\/a>\u00a0as the government moved to contain the respiratory virus in the north, including all of Lombardy and 14 provinces.<\/p>\n<p>Conte&#8217;s speech was short on details, but it served as a rallying cry for the nation to cooperate with officials and follow the restrictions in place.<\/p>\n<p>He urged people to take precautions to safeguard their health, and he introduced a new slogan for citizens to live by: &#8220;I am staying home. Italy is a protected zone.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Italy has pledged $8.5 billion to help the economy weather the emergency.<\/p>\n<p>The Rome region has ordered quarantine for all those arriving who&#8217;ve been in outbreak areas in the past two weeks.
