{"id":23622,"date":"2020-04-13T10:14:53","date_gmt":"2020-04-13T17:14:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=23622"},"modified":"2020-04-13T16:16:50","modified_gmt":"2020-04-13T23:16:50","slug":"navy-reports-first-coronavirus-death-from-roosevelt-crew","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=23622","title":{"rendered":"Navy reports first coronavirus death from Roosevelt crew"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A member of the crew of the coronavirus-infected USS Theodore Roosevelt warship died Monday of complications related to the disease, the Navy said, adding to setbacks for the sidelined aircraft carrier.<\/p>\n<p>The sailor, whose name and other identifying information were not publicly released pending notification of relatives, had tested positive for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/VirusOutbreak\">coronavirus<\/a>\u00a0on March 30 and was taken off the ship and placed in \u201cisolation housing\u201d along with four other sailors at the U.S. Navy base on Guam. On April 9 he was found unresponsive during a medical check and was moved to a local hospital\u2019s intensive care unit.<\/p>\n<p>The Roosevelt has been in a coronavirus crisis that prompted the Navy\u2019s civilian leader,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/806e7feb6749380553a3ae613871dbb4\">Thomas Modly,<\/a>\u00a0to fire the ship\u2019s captain on April 2. Five days later, after flying to the ship and delivering a speech in which he insulted the skipper, Capt. Brett E. Crozier, and criticized the crew for supporting Crozier, Modly resigned.<\/p>\n<p>As of Sunday, 585 members of the Roosevelt crew had tested positive for coronavirus. Nearly 4,000 crew members had been moved ashore.<\/p>\n<p>An investigation of the Roosevelt\u2019s coronavirus outbreak and related events is ongoing.
