{"id":23772,"date":"2020-04-16T17:00:39","date_gmt":"2020-04-17T00:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=23772"},"modified":"2020-04-16T17:00:39","modified_gmt":"2020-04-17T00:00:39","slug":"fbi-sees-spike-in-cyber-crime-during-pandemic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=23772","title":{"rendered":"FBI sees spike in cyber crime during pandemic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The FBI has seen a spike in cyber crimes reported to its Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, as both domestic and international hackers look to take advantage of Americans&#8217; daily activities moving increasingly online.<\/p>\n<p>Tonya Ugoretz, the deputy assistant director of the FBI&#8217;s Cyber Division, said Thursday that the IC3 was receiving between 3,000 and 4,000 cybersecurity complaints each day, a major jump from before the COVID-19 pandemic when about 1,000 complaints were received daily.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have increased vulnerabilities online, and increased interest from threat actors to exploit those,&#8221; Ugoretz said during a webinar hosted by the Aspen Institute on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Other countries are involved:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0Ugoretz said many of the hackers are from nation states that have a &#8220;desire to gain insight&#8221; into COVID-19-related research, and that the &#8220;rapid shift to telework&#8221; has opened up a huge amount of cyber vulnerabilities for hackers to exploit.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Countries have a very high interest in information on the virus &#8230; such as information on a vaccine,&#8221; Ugoretz said. &#8220;We have certainly seen reconnaissance activity and some intrusions into some of those institutions, especially those who have identified themselves as working on COVID research.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The FBI was among a group of federal agencies that on Wednesday put out a joint alert warning of North Korean cyber threats, particularly to financial institutions, with the goal to fund North Korean weapons programs and get around international sanctions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The FBI has seen a spike&#46;&#46;&#46;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[16,7],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-23772","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-health","category-u-s-a"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23772","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=23772"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23772\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":23773,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23772\/revisions\/23773"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=23772"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=23772"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=23772"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
