{"id":23915,"date":"2020-04-21T14:50:09","date_gmt":"2020-04-21T21:50:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=23915"},"modified":"2020-04-21T14:50:09","modified_gmt":"2020-04-21T21:50:09","slug":"u-s-senate-interim-coronavirus-relief-package-a-positive-step-more-resources-needed-at-the-county-level","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=23915","title":{"rendered":"U.S. Senate Interim Coronavirus Relief Package a Positive Step  More Resources Needed at the County Level"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>WASHINGTON<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The U.S. Senate today passed the\u00a0Paycheck Protection Program and Health Care Enhancement Act, also known as the \u201cCOVID-19 3.5\u201d relief package.\u00a0National Association of Counties (NACo) Executive Director Matthew Chase released the following statement:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe package passed by the U.S. Senate is a good step to support counties\u2019 vast health, safety and economic recovery responsibilities, many of which are mandated by states and the federal government, but we need more resources as we address this unprecedented pandemic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCounty revenues are plummeting while costs are skyrocketing. We\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.naco.org\/resources\/running-fumes-impact-covid-19-county-finances\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.naco.org\/resources\/running-fumes-impact-covid-19-county-finances&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1587591174189000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEr_xUv2QVNFKkWEGV5XznRtGXxIg\">found<\/a>\u00a0that the COVID-19 pandemic could lead to massive budgetary impacts for county governments and local taxpayers, with as much as $144 billion in\u00a0lost revenue and increased expenditures through FY2021.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe welcome President Trump\u2019s commitment to allow counties to use CARES Act and future funding to cover lost revenue, and his pledge to provide additional aid for states and local governments in a future relief package.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs we move forward, we will work in a bipartisan fashion to ensure robust, direct and flexible funding for counties of all sizes in future relief packages. Investing in counties means investing in public health and local economies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCounties are on the front lines of addressing the far-reaching health, safety and economic impacts of COVID-19, and we urge\u00a0the administration and Congress to unite in supporting relief efforts on the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Led by 40,000 elected county officials, counties\u2019 3.6 million employees serve more than 300 million residents, operating over 1,900 public health departments, nearly 1,000 hospitals, more than 800 long-term care facilities and 750 behavioral health centers.
