{"id":2393,"date":"2017-02-27T09:49:08","date_gmt":"2017-02-27T17:49:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=2393"},"modified":"2017-02-27T09:49:08","modified_gmt":"2017-02-27T17:49:08","slug":"pwc-issues-sincere-apology-after-oscars-best-picture-envelope-mistake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=2393","title":{"rendered":"PwC issues &#8216;sincere apology&#8217; after Oscars best picture envelope mistake"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"content__article-body from-content-api js-article__body\" data-test-id=\"article-review-body\">\n<p>PricewaterhouseCoopers, the accountancy firm that has overseen the counting of the Oscars ballots for 83 years, has apologised for the most spectacular blunder in the history of the starry ceremony \u2013 when the award for best film was <a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2017\/feb\/27\/moonlight-wins-best-picture-oscars-academy-award-2017\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">mistakenly presented to La La Land instead of the actual winner Moonlight<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The company promised to investigate the error after Warren Beatty, who was presenting the best picture award with Faye Dunaway,<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2017\/feb\/27\/anatomy-of-an-oscars-fiasco-how-la-la-land-was-mistakenly-announced-as-best-picture\" data-link-name=\"in body link\"> ended up with the wrong envelope<\/a>. \u201cWe sincerely apologise to Moonlight, La La Land, Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, and Oscar viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for best picture,\u201d a PwC statement said.<\/p>\n<p>Attention will focus on a provision intended to make the system failsafe: there are duplicate envelopes of the complete set of results, held in the wings in case anything should go wrong with a presenter or an envelope. Its employees wait in the wings, passing the results to the presenters. The humiliating failure of a system that was supposed to be foolproof, checked and counterchecked repeatedly, could not have been more public \u2013 watched by Hollywood stars and millions of people across the world on television.<\/p>\n<div id=\"dfp-ad--inline1\" class=\"js-ad-slot ad-slot ad-slot--inline ad-slot--inline1\" data-link-name=\"ad slot inline1\" data-name=\"inline1\" data-mobile=\"1,1|2,2|300,250|fluid\" data-desktop=\"1,1|2,2|300,250|620,1|620,350|fluid\"><\/div>\n<p>Some of the focus has shifted to PWC supervisors Brian Cullinan and Martha Ruiz, who oversee the counting procedures and are the only two people who know the winners list before the ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>In a prescient interview with the Huffington Post last week, under the headline <a class=\"u-underline\" draggable=\"true\" href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/oscar-wrong-winner-marisa-tomei_us_58af326de4b0a8a9b780339fhttp:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/oscar-wrong-winner-marisa-tomei_us_58af326de4b0a8a9b780339fhttp:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/oscar-wrong-winner-marisa-tomei_us_58af326de4b0a8a9b780339fhttp:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/oscar-wrong-winner-marisa-tomei_us_58af326de4b0a8a9b780339f\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">\u201cWhat Would Happen If A Presenter Announced The Wrong Winner At The Oscars?\u201d<\/a>, Cullinan and Ruiz discuss the \u201cunlikely\u201d eventuality that the wrong nominee will be called.<\/p>\n<p>Cullinan and Ruiz told the news website that the exact procedure for dealing with such a mistake is unknown because such errors had never been made in the Oscars\u2019 88-year history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe would make sure that the correct person was known very quickly,\u201d Cullinan told the Huffington Post. \u201cWhether that entails stopping the show, us walking onstage, us signalling to the stage manager \u2013 that\u2019s really a game-time decision, if something like that were to happen. He then passed it to Dunaway who, seeing only La La Land named on the card, proclaimed it the winner. The euphoric La La Land team crowded on to the stage and its producer, Marc Platt, began his thank you speech. According to <a class=\"u-underline\" draggable=\"true\" href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/movies\/2017\/02\/27\/oscars-2017-academy-awards-backstage-in-the-wings\/98453006\/?hootPostID=e1f53d396d108b97cd48243f0f7eb424\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">USA Today<\/a> \u2013 which had reporters backstage \u2013 a member of the accountancy staff then exclaimed \u201cHe took the wrong envelope!\u201d and ran on to the stage to stop the speech.<\/p>\n<p>As the truth dawned on the rest of his crew, producer Jordan Horowitz, carrying the Oscar statuette, held up his hand and told the audience La La Land had not won and that \u201cthis is not a joke\u201d. Beatty had by now been given the correct card, which revealed the real winner to be Moonlight. Photograph: Jordan Strauss\/Invision\/AP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Earlier in the week, Cullinan and Ruiz also gave an interview to the <a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/entertainment-arts-38923750\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">BBC<\/a>, explaining the supposedly watertight system. They told how they were helped by a small team to count and recount the paper and electronic votes by the 7,000 members of the academy as soon as the ballot closed on Tuesday. The votes were all printed out and counted and recounted manually. She and Cullinan personally put the results into the envelopes, checked and sealed them, and then memorised the results in case anything happened to the envelopes.<\/p>\n<p>The envelopes were locked in a safe until the day of the ceremony, when the accountants travelled separately to the theatre under security protection, each with a complete set of results. Each carried their briefcase of envelopes to the stage, standing stage right and stage left, ready to hand them to the presenters seconds before they walked on stage.
