(Getty Images)<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><div class=\"Ov(h) Pos(r) Mah(80px)\" data-reactid=\"8\"><button class=\"C(#157cfb) Cur(p) W(100%) T(63px) Bgc(#fff) Ta(start) Fz(13px) P(0) Bd(0) O(0) Lh(1.5) Pos(a)\" data-reactid=\"11\"><span data-reactid=\"12\">More<\/span><\/button><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<div class=\"canvas-body Wow(bw) Cl(start) Mb(20px) Fz(15px) Lh(1.6) C(#26282a) Ff($ff-secondary)\" data-reactid=\"13\">\n<p class=\"canvas-atom canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)--sm Mt(0.8em)--sm\" data-reactid=\"14\">LOS ANGELES \u2013 Longtime Los Angeles Kings play-by-play man Bob Miller sat at an elevated table in the Chick Hearn media room at Staples Center in front of a crowd of reporters and well-wishers and cracked a joke.<\/p>\n<p class=\"canvas-atom canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)--sm Mt(0.8em)--sm\" data-reactid=\"15\">\u201cThis is the biggest crowd I\u2019ve seen in here with no food being served,\u201d Miller said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"canvas-atom canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)--sm Mt(0.8em)--sm\" data-reactid=\"16\">Generally that area of the building is where the pre-game meal is served and Miller quickly decided to make a quip about this \u2013 lightning the sad mood around why Miller was sitting there addressing the people in the room in the first place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"canvas-atom canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)--sm Mt(0.8em)--sm\" style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1em;\" data-reactid=\"17\">The 78-year-old Miller announced his retirement from the broadcast booth, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/kings\/la-sp-kings-bob-miller-20170228-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a move that was not unexpected<\/a>\u00a0after a rash of recent health issues over the last year. He said he hopes to call the Kings\u2019 last two games this season and then will officially call it a career.<\/p>\n<p class=\"canvas-atom canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)--sm Mt(0.8em)--sm\" style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1em;\" data-reactid=\"18\">\u201cAfter 44 years 3,351 broadcasts, 57 years in radio and TV, I think it\u2019s time to retire and hopefully have some quality time left with my family,\u201d Miller said, while sitting next to his wife Judy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"canvas-atom canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)--sm Mt(0.8em)--sm\" data-reactid=\"20\">Miller joined the Kings as the team\u2019s play-by-play voice in 1973 and quickly endeared himself to Los Angeles hockey fans with his genuine personality and ability to tell stories along with his skill at accurately calling the action on the ice. Miller was in the booth for the \u201cMiracle on Manchester\u201d and called Wayne Gretzky\u2019s 802nd goal, which set a league record.<\/p>\n<p class=\"canvas-atom canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)--sm Mt(0.8em)--sm\" data-reactid=\"21\">In 2000, Miller received the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award by the Hockey Hall of Fame. He was also inducted in the Los Angeles Kings Hall of Fame and the Southern California Broadcasters Hall of Fame. In 2006, Miller received the 2,319th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The press box at Staples Center is named for Miller and his photo is on its wall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"canvas-atom canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)--sm Mt(0.8em)--sm\" data-reactid=\"22\">During the team\u2019s 2012 Stanley Cup run, even though the NHL on NBC had the broadcast rights, the Kings gave Miller and analyst Jim Fox a chance to record their own call of the team\u2019s first Stanley Cup victory, which the team made available via DVD. They did the same in 2014 when the Kings won their second Cup.<\/p>\n<div class=\"iframe-wrapper Pos(r) My(20px) canvas-atom Mt(14px)--sm Mb(0)--sm\" data-reactid=\"23\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"canvas-video-iframe Bdw(0) StretchedBox W(100%) H(100%)\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/w4UzOF6DQeE?feature=oembed\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" data-type=\"videoIframe\" data-reactid=\"24\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p class=\"canvas-atom canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)--sm Mt(0.8em)--sm\" style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1em;\" data-reactid=\"25\">Late in January of 2016, the Kings announced Miller would undergo bypass surgery and <a href=\"http:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/blogs\/nhl-puck-daddy\/kings-announcer-bob-miller-to-undergo-heart-bypass-surgery-220336287.html\">miss the remainder of the season.<\/a> On Thursday, Miller divulged that last May he suffered a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.strokeassociation.org\/STROKEORG\/AboutStroke\/TypesofStroke\/TIA\/Transient-Ischemic-Attack-TIA_UCM_492003_SubHomePage.jsp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">transient ischemic attack<\/a>, which he described as \u201ckind of a \u2013 a mini stroke that comes and goes and in an hour-and-a-half it may be gone and you feel fine, but you did have a stroke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"canvas-atom canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)--sm Mt(0.8em)--sm\" data-reactid=\"26\">He then returned to the team\u2019s broadcast for 2016-17 in a limited capacity, doing mostly home games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"canvas-atom canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)--sm Mt(0.8em)--sm\" style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1em;\" data-reactid=\"27\">Former NHL on ESPN voice Gary Thorne, former Dallas Stars voice Ralph Strangis, TSN\u2019s Chris Cuthbert, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/blogs\/nhl-puck-daddy\/ny-mets-success-brings-jiggs-mcdonald-back-to-islanders-booth-184100836.html\">original Kings voice Jiggs McDonald\u00a0<\/a>all filled in for Miller at points. Strangis has picked up a bulk of the games recently.<\/p>\n<p class=\"canvas-atom canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)--sm Mt(0.8em)--sm\" style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1em;\" data-reactid=\"28\">Miller then <a href=\"http:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/news\/la-kings-hall-fame-announcer-bob-miller-mild-033749788--nhl.html\">suffered a mild stroke<\/a> around NHL All-Star Weekend, which led to his eventual decision to retire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"canvas-atom canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)--sm Mt(0.8em)--sm\" data-reactid=\"29\">\u201cI\u2019m (feeling) pretty good I think,\u201d Miller said when asked about his health. \u201cThe only thing that concerns me and probably always will is how quickly the strokes that I\u2019ve had have come on with, for me, very little warning like that TIA that I had. One morning I got out of bed and was like \u2018what\u2019s wrong with my arm?\u2019 and \u2018why can\u2019t I tie my shoelaces?\u2019 And went right for the emergency room. Then the attack the other day at the all-star break, where right up until then I was hosting those events that (Kings president of business operations) Luc (Robitaille) talked about with (NHL commissioner) Gary Bettman and interviews with Hall of Famers. I did four hours of those on Thursday night and they went well and I felt fine. And then all of a sudden to find out something happened like that makes you think about being on the road, being in an airplane, being in your room alone in a hotel in the middle of the night. It gives you reason to stop and think about what\u2019s going on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"canvas-atom canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)--sm Mt(0.8em)--sm\" data-reactid=\"30\">Even though the tone and tenor of Thursday\u2019s news conference was sad to a degree, there were some light-hearted moments.
