{"id":24413,"date":"2020-05-05T17:05:55","date_gmt":"2020-05-06T00:05:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=24413"},"modified":"2020-05-05T17:05:55","modified_gmt":"2020-05-06T00:05:55","slug":"public-health-experts-weigh-in","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=24413","title":{"rendered":"PUBLIC HEALTH EXPERTS WEIGH IN"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A group of more than 800 public health experts on Tuesday called on Congress to fund mail-in voting amid rising concerns about in-person voting related to the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>The experts \u2014 made up of professors, psychologists and doctors led by the Center for American Progress \u2014\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/click1.email.thehill.com\/jjrfczshnbbwpzpbwtvnnwffnswkbsbddmnhzqkfqbbbq_sjbbmmvrvtbmllsbpjsm.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/click1.email.thehill.com\/jjrfczshnbbwpzpbwtvnnwffnswkbsbddmnhzqkfqbbbq_sjbbmmvrvtbmllsbpjsm.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1588806045998000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEaQtwi1UEkVWE0-tMKgJRolkZXdw\">sent a letter<\/a>\u00a0to the House and Senate asking that states be given $4 billion to help move to mail-in voting.<\/p>\n<p>These funds would cover the mailing and printing of ballots, securing ballot request systems and staffing, among other issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn order to ensure the integrity of the electoral process and protect the public health at the same time, it is incumbent on our leaders to prepare for a Presidential election by mail, in which ballots are sent to all registered voters, to allow them to vote from home and ensure their health and safety in the event of a new outbreak of SARS-CoV-2,\u201d the public health experts wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The experts used the recent Wisconsin primary elections as an example of how COVID-19 can spread if Americans are forced to vote in-person, after dozens of individuals there tested positive for the coronavirus in the weeks since the election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of us in public health looked on with horror as thousands of people in Wisconsin were forced to choose between exercising their right to vote and staying home to protect themselves from exposure to the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2,\u201d the group wrote. \u201cThose choosing the former were imperiling their own lives by voting in person that day.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A group of more than 800&#46;&#46;&#46;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[16],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-24413","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-health"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/24413","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=24413"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/24413\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":24414,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/24413\/revisions\/24414"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=24413"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=24413"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=24413"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
