Rep. Ro Khanna<\/a>\u00a0(D-Calif.) called Friday for a social media \u201cfairness doctrine\u201d to allow experts to respond to flagged posts, pointing to the conflict stirred up this week when Twitter flagged\u00a0some\u00a0of\u00a0President Trump<\/a>\u2019s tweets.<\/p>\n

The social media giant first flagged as misleading two of Trump\u2019s\u00a0tweets\u00a0on mail-in voting that suggested without evidence that this method leads to higher rates of voter fraud.<\/p>\n

Trump pushed back with force Thursday, signing an executive order that targeted the legal liability protections of social media groups that prevents them from being sued for what is posted on their platforms.<\/p>\n

Twitter then flagged another Trump tweet on Friday morning, labeling\u00a0it as\u00a0\u201cglorifying violence.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0The tweet appeared to threaten\u00a0military action in response to protests in Minneapolis over the police killing of George Floyd, an unarmed black man.<\/p>\n

Khanna, who represents Silicon Valley, said during a taping of\u00a0The Hill\u2019s \u201cCoronavirus Report\u201d<\/a>\u00a0that there should be a solution that defeats \u201cspeech with speech.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLet’s say the President is tweeting out conspiracy theories about\u00a0Joe Scarborough<\/a>,\u201d Khanna said, referring to Trump\u2019s tweets earlier this week about\u00a0an\u00a0unsubstantiated conspiracy theory<\/a>\u00a0regarding\u00a0the death of an aide that worked for the former\u00a0Florida\u00a0congressman.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell why not allow the widower who doesn’t want the president tweeting about his deceased wife, why not give him the opportunity to send a response and that response Twitter could send to every person who clicks on the President\u2019s tweets?\u201d Khanna suggested.<\/p>\n

\u201cOr why not allow someone to respond to the president\u2019s claims about ballot fraud?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I would say is, you defeat speech with speech. But you didn’t give one person a huge megaphone and not allow a fair response,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
