{"id":25556,"date":"2020-06-01T16:15:19","date_gmt":"2020-06-01T23:15:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=25556"},"modified":"2020-06-01T16:15:19","modified_gmt":"2020-06-01T23:15:19","slug":"statement-from-stop-aapi-hate-chinese-student-expulsion-builds-on-politically-fueled-racism-against-asian-americans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=25556","title":{"rendered":"Statement from Stop AAPI Hate: Chinese Student Expulsion Builds on Politically-Fueled Racism Against Asian Americans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Los Angeles \/ San Francisco, CA May 28, 2020 (LaPost)\u00a0 \u2014 In response to the Trump administration\u2019s <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/05\/28\/us\/politics\/china-hong-kong-trump-student-visas.html?referringSource=articleShare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/05\/28\/us\/politics\/china-hong-kong-trump-student-visas.html?referringSource%3DarticleShare&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1591139481127000&amp;usg=AFQjCNE55EjtwsFHjfrTOkjyHt2DUaFVfw\">plan<\/a> announced today to cancel the visas of thousands of Chinese graduate students and researchers in the United States, <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/stopaapihate.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/stopaapihate.org\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1591139481127000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGFLVnWoGlnYu6IFLJRU0BNESGDkQ\">Stop AAPI Hate<\/a>, the leading aggregator of incidents against Asian Americans during the pandemic, noted a disturbing connection between the plan and the president\u2019s racist and xenophobic rhetoric around COVID-19.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">While the Trump administration claims to be punishing China over its treatment of Hong Kong, its plans to cancel student visas were <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/05\/28\/us\/politics\/china-hong-kong-trump-student-visas.html?referringSource=articleShare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/05\/28\/us\/politics\/china-hong-kong-trump-student-visas.html?referringSource%3DarticleShare&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1591139481127000&amp;usg=AFQjCNE55EjtwsFHjfrTOkjyHt2DUaFVfw\">reportedly<\/a> under consideration before the Hong Kong law. In fact, the president and GOP leadership have been pushing anti-Asian sentiment during the pandemic, leading to a rising wave of hate against Asian Americans. Last month, the GOP <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2020\/04\/24\/gop-memo-anti-china-coronavirus-207244\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2020\/04\/24\/gop-memo-anti-china-coronavirus-207244&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1591139481127000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFRf4B0pPX1tO3DmsXyGq1jTJDf8g\">sent<\/a> a memo to campaigns stating that China caused the virus by covering it up, Democrats are \u201csoft on China,\u201d and Republicans will push for sanctions on China for its role in spreading the virus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">With the president putting money into campaign ads about China \u2014 amid <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/outlook\/2020\/04\/26\/no-coronavirus-is-not-biological-weapon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/outlook\/2020\/04\/26\/no-coronavirus-is-not-biological-weapon\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1591139481127000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEmUJWqfBXIM2Ljz_XJoYFFiSebGg\">conspiracy theories<\/a> about China and the virus \u2014 the plan to cancel the visas of Chinese graduate students appears not only connected to a concerted act of ongoing racial scapegoating, but an escalation of it. Just yesterday, Florida Governor Rick Scott <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/335857-scott-china-communist-spy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/335857-scott-china-communist-spy&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1591139481127000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEH4rExEUqnT6XcPhbmaQEWEVnbqA\">asserted<\/a> that \u201cevery citizen of Communist China by law has to spy on behalf of their country.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This type of rhetoric is a primary driver of hate directed at Asian Americans. As Stop AAPI Hate has documented, thousands of Asian Americans have reported acts of hate and violence since the pandemic, and 75% of Asian Americans <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/theharrispoll.com\/were-all-in-this-together-but-are-we\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/theharrispoll.com\/were-all-in-this-together-but-are-we\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1591139481127000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEFkKFg6tdk71y-g9EGkAhINsDTTg\">are concerned<\/a> about discrimination. In March, an Asian American family of three, including two children, was stabbed inside a store in Midland, Texas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stop AAPI Hate leadership \u2014 Manjusha Kulkarni, Executive Director of Asian Pacific Policy and Planning Council, Cynthia Choi, Co-Executive Director of Chinese for Affirmative Action, and Russell Jeung, Ph.D., Chair and Professor of Asian American Studies at San Francisco State University \u2014 issued the following statement:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThere is a disturbing pattern emerging between the racist and xenophobic rhetoric used by Trump regarding COVID-19 and the new efforts to impose limits on Chinese students. We have seen time and again how dangerous it is when leaders scapegoat for political gain and spread racist and xenophobic language.
