{"id":25678,"date":"2020-06-04T17:04:49","date_gmt":"2020-06-05T00:04:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=25678"},"modified":"2020-06-04T17:04:49","modified_gmt":"2020-06-05T00:04:49","slug":"chinese-and-iranian-hackers-target-biden-trump-campaigns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=25678","title":{"rendered":"Chinese and Iranian hackers target Biden, Trump campaigns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chinese and Iranian government-backed hackers recently unsuccessfully targeted campaign staff for both\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/click1.email.thehill.com\/cmqqvkhrmttfskstfgcmmfqqmhfzthtnnlmrkjzmhhghq_kshlvvmhmjlvplmtftlr.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/click1.email.thehill.com\/cmqqvkhrmttfskstfgcmmfqqmhfzthtnnlmrkjzmhhghq_kshlvvmhmjlvplmtftlr.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1591395066469000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFY1CFmtHGcjlADCKrxG4GglWLDrg\">President Trump<\/a>\u00a0and former Vice President\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/click1.email.thehill.com\/rllwyhjflccpshscpkgllpwwljpbcjcqqvlfhtbljjkjl_kshlvvmhmjlvplmtftlr.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/click1.email.thehill.com\/rllwyhjflccpshscpkgllpwwljpbcjcqqvlfhtbljjkjl_kshlvvmhmjlvplmtftlr.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1591395066469000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFMcRnLYXSCpd1T_Ii8-sklnPhmBA\">Joe Biden<\/a>, a Google threat researcher announced Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Shane Huntley, a member of Google\u2019s Threat Analysis Group (TAG), tweeted that TAG had seen advanced persistent threat (APT) groups sending malicious phishing emails to campaign staffers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecently TAG saw China APT group targeting Biden campaign staff &amp; Iran APT targeting Trump campaign staff with phishing,\u201d Huntley\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/click1.email.thehill.com\/uqhmvzybchhsjzjhsgnccsmmcyskhyhddfcbzpkcyyghy_kshlvvmhmjlvplmtftlr.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/click1.email.thehill.com\/uqhmvzybchhsjzjhsgnccsmmcyskhyhddfcbzpkcyyghy_kshlvvmhmjlvplmtftlr.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1591395066469000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGz33T3U39hpU1xjXcOItL6lqSB0g\">tweeted<\/a>. \u201cNo sign of compromise. We sent users our govt attack warning and we referred to fed law enforcement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Google\u2019s government attack warning alerts users that hackers may be attempting to steal their password, and urges them to sign up for Google\u2019s Advanced Protection Program. Huntley wrote in a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/click1.email.thehill.com\/ihhzptgkcyywrtrywbmccwzzcgwqygyffdcktnqcggbyy_kshlvvmhmjlvplmtftlr.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/click1.email.thehill.com\/ihhzptgkcyywrtrywbmccwzzcgwqygyffdcktnqcggbyy_kshlvvmhmjlvplmtftlr.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1591395066469000&amp;usg=AFQjCNENTAdDFs4Mcaehl56zDh0a3NqsTw\">blog post<\/a>\u00a0in 2018 that an \u201cextremely small fraction of users\u201d will get this alert, but that if a user does receive one, they should \u201ctake immediate action\u201d to secure their account.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the Biden campaign told The Hill that they were \u201caware\u201d of the targeting.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are aware of reports from Google that a foreign actor has made unsuccessful attempts to access the personal email accounts of campaign staff,\u201d the spokesperson said. \u201cWe have known from the beginning of our campaign that we would be subject to such attacks and we are prepared for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The spokesperson emphasized that \u201cBiden for President takes cybersecurity seriously, we will remain vigilant against these threats, and will ensure that the campaign&#8217;s assets are secured.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to The Hill\u2019s request for comment on the attempted targeting.<\/p>\n<p>Both Iran and China are considered, alongside Russia and North Korea, to be top threats to the U.S. in cyberspace. Tensions between the U.S. and China have spiked during the COVID-19 outbreak, while tensions with Iran reached a boiling point in January following the targeting and killing of Iranian Gen.
