{"id":26180,"date":"2020-06-19T15:03:19","date_gmt":"2020-06-19T22:03:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=26180"},"modified":"2020-06-19T15:03:19","modified_gmt":"2020-06-19T22:03:19","slug":"french-fine-upheld","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=26180","title":{"rendered":"FRENCH FINE UPHELD"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The highest administrative court in France on Friday upheld a previous ruling ordering Google to pay a fine of around $56 million for not being transparent about Android data privacy practices.<\/p>\n<p>The French Council of State ruled that Google had violated the European Union\u2019s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) by not providing sufficient \u201ctransparency\u201d for Android users on how their data would be used for targeted advertisements, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/click1.email.thehill.com\/inhzptgkcyywrtrywbmccwzzcgwqygyffdcktnqcyvccb_qwsmggswstmgdwfnswfd.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/click1.email.thehill.com\/inhzptgkcyywrtrywbmccwzzcgwqygyffdcktnqcyvccb_qwsmggswstmgdwfnswfd.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1592689934117000&amp;usg=AFQjCNF1e-H2liEBfqCsZGvT1RkoUnXtcQ\">translated French ruling<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The council upheld a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/click1.email.thehill.com\/nrfjgcwhkqqnbcbqntdkknjjkwnmqwqzzpkhcrmkqfkkd_qwsmggswstmgdwfnswfd.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/click1.email.thehill.com\/nrfjgcwhkqqnbcbqntdkknjjkwnmqwqzzpkhcrmkqfkkd_qwsmggswstmgdwfnswfd.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1592689934117000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGN6Eh4OSp5hBKqwMIMHiEo3dryfg\">previous 2019 ruling<\/a>\u00a0by France\u2019s National Data Protection Commission, or CNIL, that sanctioned Google for breaching the GDPR by making it difficult for users to understand how their personal data was being used.<\/p>\n<p>Google appealed this decision to the Council of State, which on Friday ruled that the original fine of \u20ac50 million, or around $56 million, was not \u201cdisproportionate\u201d and upheld CNIL\u2019s original decision.<\/p>\n<p>The GDPR, a sweeping data protection rule which went into effect in 2018, requires individuals to give informed consent for their data to be used by companies.
