A bipartisan group of lawmakers on Thursday introduced legislation in\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0House that would establish a \u201cnational cybersecurity director\u201d to lead government efforts on cybersecurity.<\/p>\n

The<\/span>\u00a0National Cyber Director Act would establish\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0position within\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0White House, with\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0director meant to serve as\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0president\u2019s key adviser on cybersecurity and other emerging technology issues.<\/p>\n

The<\/span>\u00a0individual filling\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0position would be nominated by\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0president and then Senate-confirmed, and would be responsible for overseeing\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0creation and implementation of a national cybersecurity strategy to address security risks to\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0U.S. in cyberspace.<\/p>\n

The<\/span>\u00a0position would take over many of\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0responsibilities of\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0White House cybersecurity coordinator, a position that was eliminated in 2018 by former national security adviser\u00a0John Bolton<\/a>\u00a0following\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0departure of former cybersecurity coordinator Rob Joyce.<\/p>\n

The<\/span>\u00a0creation of a national cyber director was one of\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0key recommendations made by\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0Cyberspace Solarium Commission (CSC) as part of its report rolled out in March on how to protect\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0nation from cybersecurity threats.\u00a0The<\/span>\u00a0CSC was established by Congress and is made up of members of Congress, top federal officials and industry representatives.<\/p>\n

Rep.\u00a0Mike Gallagher<\/a>\u00a0(R-Wis.),\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0co-chairman of\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0CSC, and CSC member Rep.\u00a0Jim Langevin<\/a>\u00a0(D-R.I.) are among\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0sponsors of\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0bill.<\/p>\n

Langevin said in a statement that \u201ccomplicated\u201d cybersecurity policy necessitates a national leader on\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0issue.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnly within\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0White House can we cohesively develop and implement a truly whole-of-nation cyber strategy that is commensurate with\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0threats we face,\u201d Langevin said. \u201cBy establishing a National Cyber Director with\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0policy and budgetary authority to reach across government, we can better address cybersecurity vulnerabilities and gaps holistically and prevent catastrophic cyber incidents.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
