Secretary of State\u00a0Mike Pompeo<\/a>\u00a0said the U.S. is \u201ccertainly\u201d exploring a ban on Chinese social media apps such as TikTok, citing concerns the app has shared user data with the government in Beijing.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want to get out in front of the president, but it\u2019s something we\u2019re looking at,\u201d Pompeo told Fox News Monday.<\/p>\n

Asked whether he recommended downloading TikTok, Pompeo responded: \u201cOnly if you want your private information in the hands of the Chinese Communist Party.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bipartisan U.S. lawmakers have previously expressed concerns about the app in connection with Chinese laws that require the nation’s firms to \u201cto support and cooperate with intelligence work controlled by the Chinese Communist Party,\u201d\u00a0Reuters\u00a0<\/a>noted<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Pompeo\u2019s comments come shortly after India banned TikTok, as well as 58 other Chinese apps, following a border skirmish between the two nations.<\/p>\n

Senate Minority Leader\u00a0Charles Schumer<\/a>\u00a0(D-N.Y.) and Sen.\u00a0Tom Cotton<\/a>\u00a0(R-Ark.)\u00a0asked\u00a0then-acting Director of National Intelligence\u00a0Joseph Maguire<\/a>\u00a0in an October letter\u00a0to look into whether the app poses<\/a>\u00a0\u201cnational security risks.\u201d<\/p>\n

“Security experts have voiced concerns that China\u2019s vague patchwork of intelligence, national security, and cybersecurity laws compel Chinese companies to support and cooperate with intelligence work controlled by the Chinese Communist Party,” they wrote.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
