{"id":26793,"date":"2020-07-10T15:39:26","date_gmt":"2020-07-10T22:39:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=26793"},"modified":"2020-07-10T15:39:26","modified_gmt":"2020-07-10T22:39:26","slug":"come-back-to-dc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=26793","title":{"rendered":"COME BACK TO DC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A coalition of left-leaning advocacy groups called on the Senate Friday to return from its July recess to vote on legislation to increase election funding during the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>The more than two dozen groups, led by advocacy organization Stand Up America,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/click1.email.thehill.com\/mcssmzwgpccljzjcltnpplsspwlvcwckkdpgzbvpyqbww_hhsvccbqbzvcfssvmfvn.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/click1.email.thehill.com\/mcssmzwgpccljzjcltnpplsspwlvcwckkdpgzbvpyqbww_hhsvccbqbzvcfssvmfvn.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1594505806096000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGUdZkf7w2YH-NuqQl5xtJ9QXGlZA\">sent a letter<\/a>\u00a0to Senate Majority Leader\u00a0Mitch McConnell\u00a0(R-Ky.) and other GOP leaders asking that the Senate immediately be called back to Washington, D.C., to vote on and pass legislation allocating $3.6 billion to states to help with election challenges during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>These funds were included in the House-passed HEROES Act, a Democratic-backed coronavirus stimulus package that McConnell has blocked in the Senate, describing the bill as a \u201cliberal wish list.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith over 130,000 Americans dead and cases surging across the country, responding to the COVID-19 pandemic should be the Senate\u2019s top priority,\u201d the groups wrote. \u201cYet, the Senate has willfully failed to act under your leadership and remains in recess despite the urgent need to address the worsening pandemic and safeguard our rapidly-approaching elections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other advocacy groups that signed on included Greenpeace USA, Color of Change, the American Association of People with Disabilities, the League of Women Voters, Public Citizen and UnidosUS, among others.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate is currently scheduled to be out through July 17.<\/p>\n<p>McConnell\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/click1.email.thehill.com\/vfymdqrbyffncqcfnkhyynmmyrnzfrfttgybqjzypvjrf_hhsvccbqbzvcfssvmfvn.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/click1.email.thehill.com\/vfymdqrbyffncqcfnkhyynmmyrnzfrfttgybqjzypvjrf_hhsvccbqbzvcfssvmfvn.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1594505806096000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHlZtvaqKh-DVO81rUFA1uvnpmfTA\">laid out plans earlier this week<\/a>\u00a0for what will be included in the next Senate coronavirus stimulus package, including potential direct payments to Americans, but has not yet publicly said whether he will support election funding.
