{"id":29951,"date":"2020-12-11T13:28:54","date_gmt":"2020-12-11T21:28:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=29951"},"modified":"2020-12-16T13:29:39","modified_gmt":"2020-12-16T21:29:39","slug":"sanofi-glaxo-announces-setback-in-coronavirus-vaccine-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=29951","title":{"rendered":"Sanofi, Glaxo announces setback in coronavirus vaccine project\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sanofi and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) on Friday announced a setback in their coronavirus vaccine project, saying they now expect their vaccine to be available next year.<\/p>\n<p>The companies\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/click1.email.thehill.com\/pqfdwrftvhhbgrghbymvvbddvfbkhfhsslvtrckhflhvdd_ufghnnwqwshfyppwhnyf.html?a=&amp;b=35488\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/click1.email.thehill.com\/pqfdwrftvhhbgrghbymvvbddvfbkhfhsslvtrckhflhvdd_ufghnnwqwshfyppwhnyf.html?a%3D%26b%3D35488&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1608240301204000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHwqd5lyX-3aAblNtwneMHxdKq4sg\">said in a joint statement<\/a>\u00a0that interim results from a phase 1\/2 trial showed the vaccine produced a low immune response in older adults, which it said was likely due to an insufficient concentration of the antigen.<\/p>\n<p>The vaccine did elicit an immune response in adults 18-49 years old that the companies said was comparable to that seen in recovered COVID-19 patients.<\/p>\n<p>U.K.-based GSK and French company Sanofi said they will conduct a phase 2b study in February 2021. Phase 3 confirmatory trials, which were originally slated for this month, are now expected to begin by the second quarter of 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The companies now think the vaccine will be available from mid-2021 to the fourth quarter of 2021.
