{"id":31378,"date":"2021-02-03T22:06:38","date_gmt":"2021-02-04T06:06:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=31378"},"modified":"2021-02-03T22:06:38","modified_gmt":"2021-02-04T06:06:38","slug":"cdc-director-coronavirus-infections-hospitalizations-falling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=31378","title":{"rendered":"CDC director: Coronavirus infections, hospitalizations falling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The numbers are trending in the right direction, but in the big picture, they&#8217;re still much, much higher than they should be.<\/p>\n<p>New coronavirus cases in the U.S. have fallen to pre-Thanksgiving levels, the head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said Wednesday, and infection rates are continuing to decline.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We now appear to be in a consistent downward trajectory&#8221; for both cases and hospital admissions, CDC Director\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/click1.email.thehill.com\/chtqvkhrmttfskstfgcmmfqqmhfzthtnnlmrkjzthmjdlj_qmpmggswstmfmwsdgmhg.html?a=&amp;b=36637\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/click1.email.thehill.com\/chtqvkhrmttfskstfgcmmfqqmhfzthtnnlmrkjzthmjdlj_qmpmggswstmfmwsdgmhg.html?a%3D%26b%3D36637&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1612504706795000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHvLGmBcIwp2vx_Zupj6ien7UPa4g\">Rochelle Walensky<\/a>\u00a0told reporters during a White House COVID-19 briefing.<\/p>\n<p><em>The numbers:\u00a0<\/em>Cases have declined since hitting a peak on Jan. 8, dropping 13.4 percent to an average of nearly 144,000 per day from Jan. 26 to Feb. 1, Walensky said.<\/p>\n<p>Deaths are continuing to increase, but the pace is slowing.<\/p>\n<p><em>Implication:\u00a0<\/em>Infection numbers are still twice as high as the peak number of cases over the summer, and the U.S. is still averaging more than 3,000 deaths a day.
