Blinken, Secretary of State<\/p>\n<p>Today, the United States, in unity with our partners, is imposing sanctions against\u00a0Wang Junzheng, the Secretary of the Party Committee of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps\u00a0(XPCC) and\u00a0Chen Mingguo, Director of the Xinjiang Public Security Bureau (XPSB)\u00a0under the Global Magnitsky sanctions program. \u00a0We are doing so in response to\u00a0serious human rights abuse against members of ethnic and religious minority groups in Xinjiang.<\/p>\n<p>Wang Junzheng\u00a0and\u00a0Chen Mingguo\u00a0are being designated\u00a0pursuant to Executive Order 13818\u00a0in connection with the People\u2019s Republic of China\u2019s (PRC) appalling abuses in Xinjiang.\u00a0 Wang is being designated for having acted or purported to act for or on behalf of, directly or indirectly, the XPCC.\u00a0 Chen is being designated for being a foreign person who is a leader or an official of the XPSB, which has engaged in, or whose members have engaged in, serious human rights abuse related to Chen\u2019s tenure.<\/p>\n<p>Amid growing international condemnation, the PRC continues to commit genocide and crimes against humanity in Xinjiang. \u00a0The United States reiterates its calls on the PRC to bring an end to the repression of Uyghurs, who are predominantly Muslim, and members of other ethnic and religious minority groups in Xinjiang, including by releasing all those arbitrarily held in internment camps and detention facilities.<\/p>\n<p>We have taken this action today in solidarity with our partners in the United Kingdom, Canada, and the European Union.\u00a0 As part of their actions today, our partners also sanctioned human rights abusers in connection with the atrocities occurring in Xinjiang and other countries.\u00a0 These actions demonstrate our ongoing commitment to working multilaterally to advance respect for human rights and shining a light on those in the PRC government and CCP responsible for these atrocities.<\/p>\n<p>The United States is committed to playing a strong leadership role in global efforts to combat serious human rights abuse, through the Global Magnitsky sanctions program and similar efforts.\u00a0 Targeted sanctions, including against those who violate or abuse human rights, are an important tool to discourage malign actors and promote accountability<\/p>\n<p>The United States applauds the EU\u2019s broader human rights sanctions action today.\u00a0 We welcome the EU\u2019s use of this powerful tool to promote accountability for human rights abuse on a global scale. \u00a0A united transatlantic response sends a strong signal to those who violate or abuse international human rights, and we will take further actions in coordination with likeminded partners.\u00a0\u00a0We will continue to stand with our allies around the world in calling for an immediate end to the PRC\u2019s crimes and for justice for the many victims.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>03\/22\/2021 12:08 PM EDT Antony J.&#46;&#46;&#46;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[7,5],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-33152","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-u-s-a","category-world"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/33152","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=33152"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/33152\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":33153,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/33152\/revisions\/33153"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=33152"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=33152"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=33152"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
