Fong has represented more than half of the Assembly District as an elected college trustee for the past six years.<\/p>\n<p>In announcing his campaign, Fong released the following statement:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe public health and economic challenges we face are unprecedented, but so are the opportunities that now exist to create good and lasting public policy. I\u2019m running for State Assembly because I love California, and I want to implement new ideas and long-term solutions aimed at protecting public health, creating jobs, expanding workforce development and high growth sector training programs, fully funding public schools and expanding access to quality higher education, fighting for immigrant and civil rights, and protecting our environment. I\u2019m excited to launch our campaign, and I\u2019m looking forward to the many conversations that lay ahead with residents in the dynamic and diverse communities of the 49<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Assembly District.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Fong is seeking to succeed State Assemblymember Ed Chau, although he will not run against Assemblymember Chau if he seeks re-election. The 49th Assembly District includes the cities of Alhambra, Arcadia, El Monte, Monterey Park, Rosemead, San Gabriel, San Marino, Temple City and portions of Montebello, and South El Monte.<\/p>\n<p>As an elected trustee on the board of America\u2019s largest community college district, Mike Fong works to increase student access to higher education, expand workforce training, and improve the quality of educational opportunities available at Los Angeles\u2019s nine Community Colleges. Professionally, Fong serves as Director of Policy and Government Relations for the City of Los Angeles Department of Neighborhood Empowerment.\u00a0 He previously served as the East Area Director for Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.<\/p>\n<p>Fong serves on the board of Goodwill Southern California and on the advisory board for LA&#8217;s BEST After School Enrichment Program. His long record of community service also includes having served as chair of the PBS Southern California Asian Pacific Islander Community Council, a member of the White Memorial Medical Center Community Leadership Council, and chair of the California Democratic Party Asian Pacific Islander Caucus, and as president of the Asian Pacific Alumni of UCLA.<\/p>\n<p>A lifelong L.A.
