{"id":33511,"date":"2021-03-31T18:45:48","date_gmt":"2021-04-01T01:45:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=33511"},"modified":"2021-03-31T18:45:48","modified_gmt":"2021-04-01T01:45:48","slug":"urging-an-investigation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=33511","title":{"rendered":"URGING AN INVESTIGATION"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two tech advocacy groups, Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood (CCFC) and the Center for Digital Democracy (CDD,) <a href=\"https:\/\/click1.email.thehill.com\/uhfmvzybchhsjzjhsgnccsmmcyskhyhddfcbzpkhhgwfmg_dtdtcchphftmtdphgsst.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/click1.email.thehill.com\/uhfmvzybchhsjzjhsgnccsmmcyskhyhddfcbzpkhhgwfmg_dtdtcchphftmtdphgsst.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1617323009910000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHMZq8FvxW54xSDCY-NBmVljd3M7w\">filed a complaint<\/a>\u00a0with the Federal Trade Commission Wednesday alleging Google is certifying apps for children as safe and appropriate violate a children\u2019s privacy law by collecting personal data without parental consent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe urge the FTC to investigate Google\u2019s practices and the truthfulness of its representations and act to protect parents from being misled and children from playing apps that are not appropriate and violate their privacy,\u201d the groups wrote in the complaint.<\/p>\n<p>A Google spokesperson defended the company\u2019s handling of apps directed to children in response to the complaint.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoogle Play is committed to providing a positive and safe environment for children and families,\u201d the spokesperson said in a statement, adding that the company has taken steps to update the app store in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>The groups acknowledged that Google has changed how it treats apps intended for children since they filed a complaint in 2018 over similar concerns. But they said the company has not fixed the alleged violations of COPPA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe FTC failed to act when this problem was brought to its attention over two years ago.
