{"id":34017,"date":"2021-04-14T18:35:21","date_gmt":"2021-04-15T01:35:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=34017"},"modified":"2021-04-14T18:35:21","modified_gmt":"2021-04-15T01:35:21","slug":"drug-overdose-deaths-climbed-during-early-months-of-pandemic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=34017","title":{"rendered":"Drug overdose deaths climbed during early months of pandemic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The U.S. drug overdose death toll climbed during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/click1.email.thehill.com\/zpwdvgzjfrrkcgcrkbsffkddfzkqrzrttlfjgwqrrsbfrs_hwmvccbqbzvwvmsbmssh.html?a=&amp;b=38345\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/click1.email.thehill.com\/zpwdvgzjfrrkcgcrkbsffkddfzkqrzrttlfjgwqrrsbfrs_hwmvccbqbzvwvmsbmssh.html?a%3D%26b%3D38345&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1618525180344000&amp;usg=AFQjCNH5vvXKZ03gENQ4KUIEH-DDZbLbJQ\">preliminary data<\/a>\u00a0from the CDC.<\/p>\n<p>In statistics released Wednesday, the CDC said\u00a0more\u00a0than 87,000 Americans died from drug overdoses in the 12-month period that started in October 2019 and ended in September 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The largest increases in drug overdose deaths occurred in the 12-month periods that ended in April and May 2020, months early in the pandemic when many states had some form of shutdown in place.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, the preliminary data found a 29 percent increase in overdose deaths in the 12-month period ending in September 2020, when compared to the year period ending in September 2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What this means:\u00a0<\/strong>The surge in drug overdose deaths represents a setback after overdose fatalities fell slightly in 2018 for the first time in decades.
