Los Angeles, CA\u00a0<\/em>\u2013\u00a0The Civilian Oversight Commission for the Los Angeles County Sheriff\u2019s Department hosted a virtual Commission meeting today and took action on three important items: the Sheriff\u2019s Department Budget Priorities, Deputy Cliques Policy and Investigations of Fatal Use of Force.<\/p>\n

Sheriff’s Department Budget
\n<\/strong>The Commission will send a\u00a0letter of support to the Chief Executive Office<\/a>\u00a0requesting prioritization of body worn cameras & Mental Evaluations Teams.\u00a0The motion passed to send the letter after Commissioner discussion regarding the\u00a0memo from the Budget Ad Hoc Committee<\/a>\u00a0and public comment.<\/p>\n

Independent Investigations of Fatal Use of Force
\n<\/strong>In other actions,\u00a0the Commission unanimously approved\u00a0the recommendation from the Use of Force Ad Hoc Committee<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0states the Office of the Inspector General should be designated by the Board of Supervisors as the primary investigative agency for all lethal uses of force and uses of force that cause great bodily injury\u00a0by deputy sheriffs of the Los Angeles County Sheriff\u2019s Department.<\/p>\n

Deputy Cliques
\n<\/strong>And lastly, Commissioner Sean Kennedy along with two law students,\u00a0Bianca Torres Murray and Jordy Garcia,\u00a0presented this PPT<\/a>\u00a0to discuss the findings of the Loyola Law School Report\u00a0\u201c50 Years of Deputy Gangs in the Los Angeles County Sheriff\u2019s Department.”<\/a><\/p>\n

Commissioner Robert Bonner then discussed the draft proposed policy & preamble\u00a0that discourages deputies from joining and participating in deputy gangs. A motion to send\u00a0this proposed policy & preamble<\/a>\u00a0recommendation to the Sheriff\u2019s Department was\u00a0approved unanimously.<\/p>\n

The Commission also authorized the Deputy Cliques Ad Hoc Committee to engage outside counsel to advise on the constitutionality of its proposed policy prohibiting Sheriff\u2019s Department personnel from joining, participating in or soliciting others to join deputy cliques.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
