The tone was set early when House Intelligence Committee ranking member\u00a0Devin Nunes\u00a0(R-Calif.) opened the hearing by severely criticizing committee Democrats for steps taken against former\u00a0President Trump\u00a0over the past several years, and claiming intelligence officials had not testified over the past two years due to these actions.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe real reason Trump officials didn\u2019t want to participate is that for years the committee\u2019s Democrats hijacked our open hearings to advance their conspiracy theories that the Trump administration was filled with Russian agents who colluded with Putin to hack the 2016 elections,\u201d Nunes said.<\/p>\n
Committee Chairman\u00a0Adam Schiff\u00a0(D-Calif.) stressed by comparison in his opening remarks that it was \u201cimportant to speak truth to power,\u201d even if \u201cintelligence assessments prove politically inconvenient.\u201d<\/p>\n
