With roots in more than 20 different countries, the Asian American population as a group\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2021\/04\/29\/key-facts-about-asian-americans\/\">nearly doubled<\/a>\u00a0between 2000 and 2019. Demographic shifts have led to increased prominence for Asian Americans in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2020\/05\/07\/asian-americans-are-the-fastest-growing-racial-or-ethnic-group-in-the-u-s-electorate\/\">voting booth<\/a>\u00a0and the halls of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2021\/01\/28\/racial-ethnic-diversity-increases-yet-again-with-the-117th-congress\/\">Congress<\/a>. At the same time,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2021\/04\/21\/one-third-of-asian-americans-fear-threats-physical-attacks-and-most-say-violence-against-them-is-rising\/\">32% of Asian adults<\/a>\u00a0say they have feared that someone might threaten or physically attack them due to their race in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2021\/04\/03\/us\/anti-asian-attacks.html\">wake of violent incidents<\/a>\u00a0against Asian Americans during the ongoing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/topics\/coronavirus-disease-2019-covid-19\/\">coronavirus outbreak<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the midst of these political and cultural developments, a Pew Research Center analysis of more than five years of congressional social media activity finds that lawmakers are increasingly mentioning Asian Americans on Facebook and Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>From 2016 through 2019, lawmaker mentions of Asian Americans on social media \u2013 either of the population at large or of smaller subgroups \u2013 followed a relatively predictable pattern.
