Blinken, May 24, 2021<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Secretary of State Antony J.\u202fBlinken\u202fwill travel to the Federal Republic of Germany on June 22,\u00a02021, where he will meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and German Minister of Foreign Affairs Heiko Maas to reaffirm the U.S. commitment to deepening the U.S.-Germany and Transatlantic relationships.\u00a0 They will discuss\u00a0recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic, addressing the climate crisis, and meeting the\u00a0challenges posed by China and Russia.\u00a0 Secretary Blinken will also take\u00a0part in the Berlin II Conference\u00a0on\u00a0peace and stability in\u00a0Libya.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Working Together to Strengthen European and Global Security<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The United States\u00a0and Germany enjoy a close relationship and\u00a0Alliance, built on mutual commitments to democracy, human rights, the rule of law, security and prosperity.\u00a0\u00a0The United States and Germany cooperate through\u00a0several\u00a0multilateral institutions including NATO, the G7,\u00a0the\u00a0OSCE, and the UN,\u00a0to advance\u00a0security, democratic values and the rule of law globally.<\/li>\n<li>The United States and Germany are engaged and dedicated NATO Allies, and American and German servicemembers have proudly served side by side in Afghanistan and Iraq.\u00a0 Our two countries are committed to close Transatlantic defense cooperation, and joint training and capacity building exercises are regularly performed at U.S. military installations in Germany.<\/li>\n<li>The United States and Germany\u202fshare concerns about the health of both our citizens and the global community as we seek\u00a0to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and ensure equitable access to safe and effective\u00a0vaccines.\u00a0\u00a0Both countries are leaders in funding global vaccination efforts, with the United States\u00a0announcing funding of\u00a0$4 billion to COVAX and Germany announcing funding of 1.5 billion euros to COVAX and the WHO.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Extensive Economic and Cultural Ties<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The United States\u00a0and Germany share a deep, extensive,\u00a0and mutually beneficial trade relationship.\u00a0\u00a0Germany is the largest European trading partner of the United States.\u00a0 In 2020 Germany was the sixth-largest market\u00a0globally\u00a0for U.S. exports and the United States\u2019 fifth-largest trading partner in total trade.\u00a0\u00a0Since 2012, the United States and Germany have averaged roughly\u00a0$170 billion in annual trade in goods, with $172.9 billion in total trade in 2020.\u00a0 The United States is Germany\u2019s largest export market, and Germany is the third-largest source of foreign direct investment in the United States.<\/li>\n<li>More\u00a0than\u00a040\u00a0million Americans of German heritage\u00a0live\u00a0in the United States, comprising the largest ethnic\u00a0ancestry\u00a0group of the United States.\u00a0\u00a0Established in 1952, the U.S.-Germany Fulbright program is one of the oldest, largest, and most innovative Fulbright programs in the world, and the binational German-American Fulbright Commission has created initiatives\u00a0such as diversity programs and an international higher education administrators seminar, which are emulated by other Fulbright commissions in Europe and around the world.\u00a0\u00a0Since\u00a01983, the bilateral\u00a0Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange program has\u00a0provided\u00a0almost 28,000\u00a0U.S. and German high school students and young professionals\u00a0with an academic year exchange experience\u00a0resulting in thousands of\u00a0new\u00a0personal\u00a0and professional\u00a0connections between the United States\u00a0and Germany.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Working Together to Combat Anti-Semitism and Holocaust Denial<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0United States and Germany share a commitment to combatting anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial and distortion and to finding innovative new ways to enhance Holocaust education and commemoration.\u00a0 We plan to discuss steps we can take together in these areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>United in Combatting the Climate Crisis<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0United States and Germany are\u00a0leaders in the\u00a0fight against climate change, encouraging other countries to set ambitious climate targets of their own.\u202f\u00a0The United States\u00a0is\u00a0committed to reaching the goal of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius as outlined in the\u202fParis Agreement.\u00a0 We applaud Germany\u2019s\u00a0ambitious climate goals that they have set for themselves in terms of cutting emissions.\u00a0\u00a0Our two countries are united in our goals\u00a0of leading the world to develop innovative clean technologies, transforming energy systems across the board, and achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across global economies by 2050 or before.<\/li>\n<li>S.\u202fSpecial Presidential Envoy for\u00a0Climate\u00a0John Kerry\u202frecently visited\u202fGermany to discuss climate policy, where he met with\u202fGerman Foreign Minister Heiko Maas\u202fin Berlin to discuss the threat of climate change to international security.\u202f\u00a0The United States looks forward to cooperating with Germany in
