{"id":37408,"date":"2021-07-07T17:57:08","date_gmt":"2021-07-08T00:57:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=37408"},"modified":"2021-07-07T17:57:08","modified_gmt":"2021-07-08T00:57:08","slug":"paper-industry-drugmakers-spar-over-requirement-to-print-prescribing-information","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=37408","title":{"rendered":"Paper industry, drugmakers spar over requirement to print prescribing information"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Drugmakers are resuming their annual lobbying battle with the paper industry over an obscure clause slipped into a key spending bill.<\/p>\n<p>The House Appropriations Committee\u2019s legislation to fund the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), advanced last week, includes a provision preventing the agency from digitizing prescribing information.<\/p>\n<p>The FDA first proposed a rule in 2014 that would have eliminated paper prescribing information. But Congress, spurred on by paper industry lobbyists, has passed a rider blocking the agency from implementing the rule in every appropriations bill since 2015.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Team modernization:\u00a0<\/strong>The Alliance to Modernize Prescribing Information, a group of pharmaceutical companies, is lobbying lawmakers to remove the provision when the bill goes to the House floor.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the Alliance called the measure \u201cessentially an earmark for the multi-million dollar paper lobby,\u201d arguing that Congress\u2019s rule mandates paper waste and that paper labels provide pharmacists with outdated information.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Team paper:\u00a0<\/strong>The Pharmaceutical Printed Literature Association, which represents companies involved in the printed prescribing information (PI) supply chain, is the leading paper industry group backing Congress\u2019s rule.<\/p>\n<p>The association told The Hill that health care professionals prefer printed PI, and that rural communities lacking broadband internet cannot reliably access the information online.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Drugmakers are resuming their annual lobbying&#46;&#46;&#46;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[16],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-37408","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-health"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/37408","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=37408"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/37408\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":37409,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/37408\/revisions\/37409"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=37408"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=37408"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=37408"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
