Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry traveled to\u00a0Tokyo, Japan,\u00a0and\u00a0Tianjin, People\u2019s Republic of China from August 31 to September\u00a03, 2021,\u00a0to engage with international counterparts\u00a0on bilateral and multilateral efforts to raise\u00a0climate ambition ahead of the 26th Conference of the Parties (COP26) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change\u202f(UNFCCC),\u202fwhich will be held\u00a0October 31 to\u00a0November\u00a012, 2021,\u00a0in Glasgow, United\u00a0Kingdom.<\/p>\n

In Tokyo, Special Envoy Kerry met with Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga and senior officials, including Chief Cabinet Secretary\u00a0Katsunobu\u00a0Kato, METI Minister Hiroshi\u00a0Kajiyama, Environment Minister\u00a0Shinjiro\u00a0Koizumi, and Foreign Minister\u00a0Toshimitsu\u00a0Motegi, to continue their ongoing discussions on bilateral and multilateral efforts on climate action in this decisive decade. Special Envoy Kerry also met with Kimiko Hirata, International Director of the Japanese climate NGO\u00a0Kiko\u00a0Network and winner of the 2021 Goldman Prize for her leadership in driving climate change action in Japan. Separately, Special Envoy Kerry and Environment Minister\u00a0Shinjiro\u00a0Koizumi participated together in a pre-recorded public dialogue hosted by the U.S.-Japan Council, entitled, \u201cBilateral Boardroom: U.S.-Japan Leadership in Addressing the Climate Crisis,<\/a>\u201d to discuss U.S.-Japan leadership to tackle the climate crisis.\u00a0On the occasion of\u00a0the Special Envoy\u2019s visit to Japan, Japan and the United States issued a\u00a0U.S.-Japan Joint Statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In Tianjin, Special Envoy Kerry met with\u00a0PRC\u00a0Special Envoy for Climate Change\u00a0Xie\u00a0Zhenhua\u00a0to continue ongoing discussions\u00a0on\u00a0efforts to address the climate crisis.\u00a0\u00a0The discussions focused on\u00a0bilateral and multilateral\u00a0efforts\u00a0to tackle the climate crisis with seriousness and\u00a0urgency,\u00a0and\u00a0raising global climate ambition on the road to COP26 in Glasgow.\u00a0Special Envoy Kerry also\u00a0met\u00a0virtually\u00a0with\u00a0Vice Premier Han Zheng,\u00a0Director\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0Office\u00a0<\/wbr>of\u00a0the Foreign Affairs Commission Yang\u00a0Jiechi, and State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
