{"id":40561,"date":"2021-09-28T17:34:29","date_gmt":"2021-09-29T00:34:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=40561"},"modified":"2021-09-28T17:34:29","modified_gmt":"2021-09-29T00:34:29","slug":"california-extends-worker-vaccine-requirement-to-protect-vulnerable-californians-from-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=40561","title":{"rendered":"California Extends Worker Vaccine Requirement to Protect Vulnerable Californians from COVID-19"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: center;\"><em>Workers in Adult and Senior Care Facilities and Employees Providing In-home Direct Care Must Be Fully Vaccinated by November 30<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SACRAMENTO \u2013 To provide additional protections against COVID-19 for vulnerable individuals across the state, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) today issued a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdph.ca.gov\/Programs\/CID\/DCDC\/Pages\/COVID-19\/Order-of-the-State-Public-Health-Officer-Adult-Care-Facilities-and-Direct-Care-Worker-Vaccine-Requirement.aspx\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.cdph.ca.gov\/Programs\/CID\/DCDC\/Pages\/COVID-19\/Order-of-the-State-Public-Health-Officer-Adult-Care-Facilities-and-Direct-Care-Worker-Vaccine-Requirement.aspx&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1632962017291000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHi1i62T88hlKAz64oMZ3ToNGND3A\">public health order<\/a>\u00a0requiring COVID-19 vaccinations for workers in adult and senior care facilities and those employed in in-home direct care settings. The order applies to all adult and senior care facilities, certain persons who provide In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS), certified home care aides, and Waiver Personal Care Services (WPCS) providers, hospice workers who provide services in the home or a licensed facility, and all employees, as well as service provider workers, who provide services through the state\u2019s regional centers that serve individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe can and must continue to protect our most vulnerable communities from the ongoing threat of COVID-19,\u201d said Dr. Tom\u00e1s J. Arag\u00f3n, CDPH Director and State Public Health Officer. \u201cThese care settings are home to\u00a0Californians with complex medical conditions, all of whom are at high risk of having severe but preventable outcomes including hospitalization, severe illness, and death,\u201d said Dr. Aragon. \u201cIncreasing vaccination rates among those who are providing care will help curb the spread of COVID-19 in these\u00a0high-risk settings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">California has reported 19,830 confirmed COVID-19 outbreaks throughout the pandemic, and nearly 50% of those were reported in health care, congregate care, and direct care settings. Of these outbreaks, the most (22%) have occurred in adult and senior care facilities and in-home direct care settings and cases and outbreaks often include workers and unvaccinated individuals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new vaccine requirement mirrors the state\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdph.ca.gov\/Programs\/CID\/DCDC\/Pages\/COVID-19\/Order-of-the-State-Public-Health-Officer-Health-Care-Worker-Vaccine-Requirement.aspx\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.cdph.ca.gov\/Programs\/CID\/DCDC\/Pages\/COVID-19\/Order-of-the-State-Public-Health-Officer-Health-Care-Worker-Vaccine-Requirement.aspx&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1632962017291000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHRLBTV7GlZWcfdh0naCaE8HQHgcQ\">vaccine requirement for health care workers<\/a>\u00a0announced on August 5. Workers covered by today\u2019s order must have their first dose of a one-dose regimen or their second dose of a two-dose regimen by November\u00a030,\u00a02021.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">California is leading the nation in vaccinations according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), with more than\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/*vaccinations_vacc-people-onedose-pop-12yr__;Iw!!AvL6XA!hGhAqIZQXe2-kS3VpEsFDfeTYBzs2eqpVJ66YNTqsXhLlb9lbRYEYkqPsTGs_hrSnLl8tnxalw$\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/*vaccinations_vacc-people-onedose-pop-12yr__;Iw!!AvL6XA!hGhAqIZQXe2-kS3VpEsFDfeTYBzs2eqpVJ66YNTqsXhLlb9lbRYEYkqPsTGs_hrSnLl8tnxalw$&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1632962017291000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEkQ39QyeqfIuhVfjPojo0fRbQluw\">50.4 million doses administered and 83.8 percent of the eligible population<\/a>\u00a0having received at least one dose. However,\u00a0in recent months the state has seen\u00a0increasing numbers of individuals \u2013 overwhelmingly unvaccinated \u2013\u00a0contracting COVID-19 and being admitted to the hospital and ICU.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">California remains committed to increasing vaccination rates and urges businesses and local communities to encourage individuals to get vaccinated.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID-19 vaccines are safe, effective, and free.
