{"id":41500,"date":"2021-10-26T16:40:40","date_gmt":"2021-10-26T23:40:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=41500"},"modified":"2021-10-26T16:40:56","modified_gmt":"2021-10-26T23:40:56","slug":"health-care-at-the-center-of-final-social-spending-talks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=41500","title":{"rendered":"Health care at the center of final social spending talks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Senate Majority Leader\u00a0<strong>Charles Schumer<\/strong>\u00a0(D-N.Y.) told reporters Tuesday that negotiators still haven\u2019t reached agreement on language to expand Medicare benefits and lower the price of prescription drugs, two major pieces of their agenda, but insisted \u201ca final deal is within reach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schumer signaled to reporters that Democrats are much closer to agreement on climate provisions, which he promised would make a \u201crobust\u201d contribution to addressing global warming.<\/p>\n<p>But he acknowledged that two of Senate Budget Committee Chairman Bernie Sanders\u2019s (I-Vt.) top priorities \u2014 expanding Medicare and cutting the cost of prescription drugs \u2014 remain unresolved.<\/p>\n<p>The other holdups are a disagreement over creating a Medicaid-type program to expand health care coverage in states that opted out of expanding Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, the length of a national paid family leave program and a proposal to empower the IRS to broadly review banking activity to find unreported tax obligations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe that we will get this done and we will get it done soon,\u201d Schumer said after a caucus meeting. \u201cNo one ever said that passing transformational legislation like this would be easy, but we are on track to get it done.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is universal consensus in our caucus that we have to come to agreement despite the differences in views on many issues,\u201d he added. \u201cI believe a final deal is within reach.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>RELATED: SANDERS DRAWS HIS RED LINES<\/h4>\n<p>Senate Budget Committee Chairman Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said on Tuesday that a deal on President Biden\u2019s spending bill must expand Medicare and include a plan to lower the cost of prescription drugs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBottom line is that any reconciliation bill must include serious negotiations on the part of Medicare with the pharmaceutical industry, lower the cost of prescription drugs. That&#8217;s what the American people want,\u201d Sanders said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that a \u201cserious reconciliation bill must include expanding Medicare to cover dental, hearing aids and eyeglasses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sanders\u2019s decision to draw red lines, while speaking with reporters on Capitol Hill, underscores the headache facing Democratic leadership as they try to reach a deal that can unify their various factions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On the other side:<\/strong>\u00a0Joe Manchin.\u00a0The West Virginia Democrat, speaking to reporters on Monday, reiterated he doesn\u2019t support expanding Medicare amid concerns about the program&#8217;s solvency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy big concern right now is the 2026 deadline [for] Medicare insolvency and if no one\u2019s concerned about that, I\u2019ve got people \u2014 that\u2019s a lifeline.
