{"id":41581,"date":"2021-10-27T16:03:23","date_gmt":"2021-10-27T23:03:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=41581"},"modified":"2021-10-27T16:03:23","modified_gmt":"2021-10-27T23:03:23","slug":"chopra-jumps-in-as-cfpb-head","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=41581","title":{"rendered":"Chopra jumps in as CFPB head"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) Director Rohit Chopra\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/click1.email.thehill.com\/fqbrtcqzyddwpcpdwbjyywrryqwldqdffnyzcgldhsgqqn_xcgdrrhvhtdbhrhjvsdg.html?a=&amp;b=43793\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/click1.email.thehill.com\/fqbrtcqzyddwpcpdwbjyywrryqwldqdffnyzcgldhsgqqn_xcgdrrhvhtdbhrhjvsdg.html?a%3D%26b%3D43793&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1635459311162000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFVjJGPz3d5BVpmdKV438NdWrQArw\">found rare common ground<\/a>\u00a0with Republicans on Wednesday over efforts to address market-shifting actions by tech giants.<\/p>\n<p>Chopra told the House Financial Services Committee during a hearing that the CFPB would \u201cfocus most of its resources on the largest firms that are engaged in nationwide harm,\u201d instead of smaller companies less capable of fighting back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the things that drives me a little crazy is when federal agencies don&#8217;t focus their efforts on nationwide or systemic or severe harm,\u201d said Chopra, a progressive Democrat, referring to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).<\/p>\n<p>Chopra served as an FTC commissioner from 2018 until his confirmation as CFPB director earlier this month. His criticism of fellow FTC commissioners for what he considered insufficient penalties for major tech companies drew high praise from Silicon Valley critics in both parties while alienating several of his colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>During his first congressional appearance as CFPB director, Chopra again rebuked the FTC, saying it let Facebook and Google \u201coff the hook\u201d while \u201cstrong-arming\u201d smaller firms into settlements.
