SACRAMENTO –\u00a0Celebrated cartoonist\u00a0Lalo Alcaraz<\/a>\u00a0is partnering with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) to\u00a0develop\u00a0artwork\u00a0for social media\u00a0encouraging\u00a0Latinos to get vaccinated against COVID-19\u00a0this holiday season.<\/p>\n

\n

The Los Angeles-based artist is best known for his contributions as a cultural consultant for \u201cThe Casagrandes\u201d on Nickelodeon and the 2017 Pixar movie, \u201cCoco.\u201d He\u00a0is\u00a0also the creator of the nationally syndicated comic strip, \u201cLa Cucaracha.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n

During the pandemic, Alcaraz has used his talents to reach the\u00a0Latino\u00a0community by blending humor and culturally relevant themes to deliver facts about COVID-19 and vaccines. As the principal artist for\u00a0CovidLatino<\/a>, his art\u00a0helps\u00a0address pervasive vaccine hesitancy and misinformation circulating in\u00a0California\u2019s\u00a0Latino communities.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cPartnerships with talented artists, like Lalo Alcaraz, ensures public health messaging continues to resonate and meet Californians from all cultures where they are,\u201d said Dr. Tom\u00e1s J. Arag\u00f3n, CDPH Director and State Public Health Officer. \u201cLalo\u2019s creativity is helping the state overcome pandemic fatigue and getting Californians the facts on the best steps they can take to protect themselves, their loved ones and their communities.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am\u00a0proud\u00a0to\u00a0be part of the\u00a0nation\u2019s most robust vaccination effort\u00a0and\u00a0to\u00a0help\u00a0the State of\u00a0California connect with diverse communities through art,\u201d Alcaraz said. \u201cArt is a powerful way to\u00a0build trust, convey life-saving information and empower these communities to\u00a0stay\u00a0protected\u00a0against this deadly virus.\u201d<\/p>\n

CDPH\u2019s\u00a0partnership with Alcaraz is part of a comprehensive effort to reach\u00a0California\u2019s\u00a0most vulnerable communities with resources and messaging to achieve higher COVID-19 vaccination rates and reduce COVID-19 hospitalization and death.\u00a0Latinos make up 38.9 percent of the state\u2019s population but\u00a045.5 percent of COVID deaths<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n

While California is making\u00a0tremendous\u00a0progress in closing vaccination gaps among its diverse population,\u00a0the state\u00a0continues its focus on leading with equity.\u00a0The\u00a0state\u2019s\u00a0Vaccinate All 58<\/a>\u00a0campaign has distributed $20 million in grants to more than\u00a0134 community-based organizations for peer-to-peer outreach,\u00a0and helps\u00a0support mobile vaccine clinics in Latino and Black\/African American neighborhoods with low vaccination rates, and works with community leaders to complement on-the-ground efforts to reach high-risk populations across the state.<\/p>\n
