{"id":44906,"date":"2022-02-16T14:57:13","date_gmt":"2022-02-16T22:57:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=44906"},"modified":"2022-02-16T14:57:13","modified_gmt":"2022-02-16T22:57:13","slug":"senators-introduce-online-kids-safety-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=44906","title":{"rendered":"Senators introduce online kids&#8217; safety bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/click1.email.thehill.com\/imczptgkcyywrtrywbmccwzzcgwqygyffdcktnqybhvygv_oljtwwjzjdtlkwfwtzrk.html?a=&amp;b=47177\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/click1.email.thehill.com\/imczptgkcyywrtrywbmccwzzcgwqygyffdcktnqybhvygv_oljtwwjzjdtlkwfwtzrk.html?a%3D%26b%3D47177&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1645137879137000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1s5iIv4ZEYFwJyH1Nnvkbz\">new proposal<\/a>\u00a0backed by bipartisan senators would require social media platforms to take additional measures to keep children under 16 safe online.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bipartisan backing:<\/strong>\u00a0The Kids Online Safety Act, introduced by Sens.\u00a0Richard Blumenthal\u00a0(D-Conn.) and Marsha Blackburn\u00a0(R-Tenn.), builds on months of momentum in Congress for social media platforms to take accountability for risks posed to children \u2014 especially after a Facebook whistleblower released internal\u00a0company documents.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation calls for social media platforms to provide families with tools and additional transparency aimed at protecting children online.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the legislation would require platforms to limit the ability of individuals to contact or find a minor, as well as prevent individuals from viewing a minor\u2019s personal data collected by or shared on the platform.<\/p>\n<p>It would also require companies to limit features that \u201cincrease, sustain or extend the use\u201d of the platform by a minor, such as automatic playing options or &#8220;rewards&#8221; for time spent on the platform, and to allow minors to opt-out of algorithmic recommendation systems.<\/p>\n<p>In some cases, platforms already have certain options for these features.
