On December 9-10,\u00a02021,\u00a0President Biden hosted the\u00a0first of two\u00a0Summits\u00a0for Democracy, a global gathering of 100 government leaders, hundreds of members of civil society, and the business community,\u00a0to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing democracies in the 21st century. \u00a0At the Summit, the U.S. government announced that the time between leaders\u2019 gatherings would constitute a Year of Action, during which the United States would work with\u00a0partners\u00a0to advance the\u00a0commitments\u00a0they made to one another to strengthen democracy, promote respect for human rights, and counter corruption and authoritarianism.<\/p>\n

As Russia\u2019s unprovoked and brutal invasion of its democratic neighbor Ukraine illustrates, defending democracy, contesting authoritarianism, and standing up for the human rights of all have never been more important to international peace and prosperity.<\/p>\n

Throughout\u00a0the\u00a0Year of Action, the U.S. government will\u00a0therefore encourage\u00a0structured dialogue and action\u00a0among governments\u00a0and other stakeholders\u00a0to advance commitments and initiatives announced by world leaders, and to report back on their progress at the second Summit.<\/p>\n

To help facilitate progress\u00a0and\u00a0advance the Summit\u2019s themes, the Department of State, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and other interagency partners will support a series of\u00a0consultative processes that aim to:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. support governments in making verifiable progress on their commitments;<\/li>\n
  2. institutionalize Summit themes and commitments into existing platforms;<\/li>\n
  3. craft a Summit outcome document; and<\/li>\n
  4. develop an inclusive agenda for the second Summit.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Across these efforts, the Department of State and USAID will engage with U.S. government interagency partners at the Departments of\u00a0Labor,\u00a0Treasury, Justice, and Commerce, as well as other relevant stakeholders.<\/p>\n
