Small businesses and low-income workers, meanwhile, are bearing the brunt of the crisis even as access to safety net programs becomes increasingly tenuous.<\/p>\n<p>That was the assessment of a group of economists who joined Ethnic Media Services for a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ethnicmediaservices.org\/media-briefings\/from-inflation-to-recession-what-are-the-signs-how-do-we-prepare-and-why-is-this-happening\/\">media briefing<\/a>\u00a0to discuss what many see as a looming recession.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCEOs are telling their investors that the current inflationary environment has created opportunities to extract more and more from consumers by raising prices,\u201d explained Dr. Rakeen Mabud, chief economist at the left-leaning Groundwork Collaborative. \u201cThese mega-corporations are able to get away with aggressive and extractive pricing because they dominate the market and know more than the consumers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mabud gave two examples of this kind of \u201cprofiteering\u201d by mega-corporations.<\/p>\n<p>The first involved the CFO of Constellation Brands, parent company of Modelo and Corona beers, who during an earnings call instructed shareholders not to \u201cleave any pricing on the table\u201d in these \u201ctimes of economic downturn.\u201d The message: keep prices high now matter the impact on consumers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/secureservercdn.net\/50.62.88.172\/99t.7da.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Headshot-Rakeen-Mabud.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15399\" src=\"https:\/\/secureservercdn.net\/50.62.88.172\/99t.7da.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Headshot-Rakeen-Mabud.jpeg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/secureservercdn.net\/50.62.88.172\/99t.7da.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Headshot-Rakeen-Mabud.jpeg 474w, https:\/\/secureservercdn.net\/50.62.88.172\/99t.7da.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Headshot-Rakeen-Mabud-300x300.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/secureservercdn.net\/50.62.88.172\/99t.7da.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Headshot-Rakeen-Mabud-150x150.jpeg 150w\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Dr. Rakeen Mabud, chief economist at the left-leaning Groundwork Collaborative<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Mabud also pointed to Visa MasterCard, the duopoly that controls over 70% of the credit card market, which alerted credit card users that the company would be raising transaction fees despite inflationary profits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis hits small businesses because they can\u2019t set prices the way big companies can. They have to sort of swallow those costs and pass them off to their consumers,\u201d Mabud said. \u201cSmall businesses can\u2019t compete with the Walmart down the street.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A June\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rooseveltinstitute.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/RI_PricesProfitsPower_202206.pdf\">analysis<\/a>\u00a0from the Roosevelt Institute found that corporations hit record high profits in 2021, charging consumers 72% more than their input costs compared to 56% pre-pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>And according to an April\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epi.org\/blog\/corporate-profits-have-contributed-disproportionately-to-inflation-how-should-policymakers-respond\/\">report<\/a>\u00a0from the Economic Policy Institute, nearly 54% of recent inflationary pressure can be attributed to corporate profits, compared to 11.4% during the last inflationary period between 1979 to 2019. Less than 8% of current inflation can be attributed to rising labor costs.<\/p>\n<p>Concentration and consolidation in specific industries \u2013 including shipping, which raked in $53 billion in profits last year \u2013 have also rattled global supply chains and contributed to rising costs.<\/p>\n<p>To discourage profiteering, Mabud explained, Congress should reinstate a historic tax on excess profits, and the Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) should aggressively crack down on monopoly power.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>\u2018Not prepared for the next crisis\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Economists argue the Fed needs to raise interest rates and stop wage growth to tamp down inflation, essentially putting the economy into a deep freeze until prices begin to settle.<\/p>\n<p>But during the briefing, analysts warned that artificially pushing the economy into a recession \u2014 defined as two straight quarters of negative growth \u2014 could be catastrophic for black workers and other marginalized groups with high unemployment rates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWages are not driving inflation and workers at the bottom of the pay scale have not benefited from the job growth,\u201d said Chad Stone, chief economist at the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities.<\/p>\n<p>According to June\u2019s job report the unemployment rate remains at 3.6%, suggesting a recession may in fact not be in the offing, though Black and Latino unemployment rates (6.8% and 4.3%, respectively) are high when compared to whites.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf a recession comes, it\u2019ll be relatively shallow,\u201d Stone said. \u201cStill, we have demographic groups that get hurt even by a short, shallow recession\u2026 We don\u2019t have targeted safety net programs that can help the most vulnerable folks and we are scrambling to get any kind of additional policy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stone explained that the last recession in April and May of 2020 \u2014 at the height of the Covid 19 pandemic \u2014\u00a0lasted only two months thanks in part to the American Rescue Plan implemented by President Joe Biden, which \u201cgave juice to the recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/secureservercdn.net\/50.62.88.172\/99t.7da.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/alix-gould-werth.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15400\" src=\"https:\/\/secureservercdn.net\/50.62.88.172\/99t.7da.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/alix-gould-werth.png\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/secureservercdn.net\/50.62.88.172\/99t.7da.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/alix-gould-werth.png 300w, https:\/\/secureservercdn.net\/50.62.88.172\/99t.7da.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/alix-gould-werth-150x150.png 150w\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Alix Gould-Werth, director of family economic security policy at the Washington Center for Equitable Growth<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Still, even during that short two-month period, the impact on women, people of color, the LGBTQ community and the undocumented was demonstrably more pronounced than on the nation at large.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur unemployment insurance system is broken.
