{"id":51416,"date":"2022-08-13T08:17:21","date_gmt":"2022-08-13T15:17:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=51416"},"modified":"2022-08-15T08:17:48","modified_gmt":"2022-08-15T15:17:48","slug":"polio-found-in-nyc-sewage-suggests-virus-circulating","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/?p=51416","title":{"rendered":"Polio found in NYC sewage suggests virus circulating"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The virus that causes polio has been found in New York City\u2019s wastewater in another sign that the disease, which hadn\u2019t been seen in the U.S. in a decade, is quietly spreading among unvaccinated people, health officials said Friday.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The presence of the poliovirus in the city\u2019s wastewater suggests likely local circulation of the virus, health authorities from the city, New York state and the federal government said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The authorities urged parents to get their children vaccinated against the potentially deadly disease.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cThe risk to New Yorkers is real but the defense is so simple \u2014 get vaccinated against polio,\u201d New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan said.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWith polio circulating in our communities there is simply nothing more essential than vaccinating our children to protect them from this virus, and if you\u2019re an unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated adult, please choose now to get the vaccine. Polio is entirely preventable and its reappearance should be a call to action for all of us.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In New York, one person suffered paralysis weeks ago because of a polio infection in Rockland County, north of the city.
