The federal government is set to suspend its offer of free at-home COVID-19 tests by Friday, Sept. 2, without congressional authorization for an extension.<\/p>\n

The U.S. Postal Service\u2019s page for ordering the tests\u00a0states<\/a>\u00a0that orders will pause by next Friday \u201cor sooner if supplies run out.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOrdering through this program will be suspended on Friday, September 2 because Congress hasn\u2019t provided additional funding to replenish the nation\u2019s stockpile of tests,\u201d a message on the federal government\u2019s COVID-19\u00a0website<\/a>\u00a0reads.<\/p>\n

The Biden administration originally announced that it would offer 1 billion free at-home COVID-19 tests in January. The federal government used COVID-19 funding from the American Rescue Plan,\u00a0President Biden\u2019s\u00a0$1.9 trillion economic stimulus and COVID-19 recovery package that he signed into law last year.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

No funding from Congress<\/strong>: A\u00a0senior administration official told\u00a0USA Today<\/a>\u00a0that the government needs to hold on to tests for a possible rise in the fall.<\/p>\n

The official said that the administration will use its existing \u201climited\u201d resources to obtain as many tests as it can, but distribution could resume on a large scale if Congress provides the funding for it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
