Fresh Off of a Refusal to Stand With Trans and Nonbinary Students in Sports, Hertzberg\u2019s Claim of Allyship Rings False<\/em><\/p>\n

\nLos Angeles, CA-<\/strong>\u00a0When asked about who should compete in women\u2019s sports at the Sherman Oaks Homeowners Association forum on\u00a0September 21<\/a>,\u00a0Sacramento State Senator Bob Hertzberg replied, \u201cI don\u2019t know the answer to that question\u2026 When it comes to me I\u2019ll do my homework. It\u2019s not my\u2026it\u2019s not something that falls in the purview of what I\u2019ve got to do in this job.\u201d His remarks come on the heels of the historic bill, SB 107, that Governor Newsom recently signed, which Bob refused to vote for.<\/p>\n

In response,\u00a0Councilwoman Lindsey Horvath<\/strong>\u00a0released the following statement:<\/p>\n

\u201cBig Oil Bob\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0insensitive response rings especially false, claiming trans and gender nonbinary students deserve protection, when just days earlier he couldn\u2019t give a definitive answer because he hasn\u2019t \u2018done his homework,\u2019 and claims it is \u2018not something that falls in the purview\u2019 of the County Board of Supervisors. Clearly,\u00a0Big Oil Bob<\/a>\u00a0has NOT done his homework on what the County Board of Supervisors actually does, which is to oversee the mental health and social services of Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

To add insult to injury, Senator Hertzberg\u00a0refused to even vote<\/a>\u00a0on Senator Wiener\u2019s newly-signed Bill, SB-107, which guarantees gender-affirming care for trans and nonbinary kids and families.<\/p>\n

Also in his \u2018apology,\u2019\u00a0Big Oil Bob<\/a>\u00a0claims<\/a>\u00a0credit for the California Student Safety and Violence Prevention Act of 2000, AB 537. Clearly, he is once again willing take to take credit for the work of others, this time from Sheila Kuehl, a trailblazing lesbian and equal rights champion. The LGBTQ+ community sees through this act and the voters do, too.<\/p>\n

I call on\u00a0Big Oil Bob<\/a>\u00a0to apologize to the trans community for his hurtful, ignorant remarks and for refusing to provide safe refuge to vulnerable people under attack by right wing extremists in our country. We need leadership in the face of these unprecedented attacks, not someone who stands idly by when our rights are under assault.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
