Blinken, Secretary of State<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">In response to the attack on author Salman Rushdie, the United States is designating the Iranian entity \u201815 Khordad Foundation.\u2019 Before the attack, this entity had issued and subsequently increased a bounty on Rushdie\u2019s life in support of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini\u2019s order calling for Rushdie\u2019s death. \u00a0We are designating it today for providing financial support for an act of terrorism.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">In 1989, following the publication of Rushdie\u2019s novel\u00a0<i>The Satanic Verses<\/i>, then-Iranian leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a fatwa calling for the author\u2019s death, leading to attacks on Rushdie and those associated with him.\u00a0 The fatwa was reaffirmed by Iran\u2019s current Supreme Leader in 2017 and was republished by Iranian state-controlled media as recently as August 2022.\u00a0 15 Khordad Foundation issued a bounty on Rushdie in support of Khomeini\u2019s 1989 fatwa, and later, in 2012, increased the bounty.\u00a0 Several of Rushdie\u2019s translators and business associates involved with the publication of\u00a0<i>The Satanic Verses<\/i>\u00a0in several countries have been killed or severely injured as a result of this incitement, as have dozens of innocent civilians.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">The infamous fatwa was intended to incite terrorism and violence, bring about the death of Rushdie and his associates, and intimidate others.\u00a0 The United States condemns such incitement and the attack on Rushdie in the strongest terms as a blatant assault on freedom of speech and an act of terrorism. \u00a0Today\u2019s action is another clear signal that we will not stand by in the face of it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>10\/28\/2022 10:59 AM EDT &nbsp; Antony&#46;&#46;&#46;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-53944","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-world"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/53944","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=53944"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/53944\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":53945,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/53944\/revisions\/53945"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=53944"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=53944"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lapost.us\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=53944"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
