COSTA MESA, CA (November 09, 2022)\u00a0 \u2013 <\/strong>Segerstrom Center for the Arts announces the return of SoCal\u2019s favorite holiday tradition – American Ballet Theatre\u2019s captivating production of\u00a0The Nutcracker.<\/em>\u00a0 Co-presented by the Center and ABT with choreography by ABT Artist in Residence Alexei Ratmansky,\u00a0The Nutcracker<\/em>\u00a0is the beloved holiday story based on\u00a0The Nutcracker and the King of Mice<\/em>\u00a0written by E.T.A. Hoffmann and set to a magical score by Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky that will be performed live by Pacific Symphony.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In its annual holiday engagement, American Ballet Theatre will give 12 performances between December 9 through December 18, 2022, in Segerstrom Hall.\u00a0 This year marks the seventh time that The Center has presented ABT\u2019s\u00a0The Nutcracker<\/em>, Southern California\u2019s grandest production of this beloved holiday tradition, featuring ABT\u2019s international all-star cast.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This engagement marks ABT\u2019s last performances with Kevin McKenzie as Artistic Director, who is retiring after three decades at the helm.\u00a0 McKenzie was a leading dancer with both The Joffrey Ballet and the National Ballet of Washington before joining American Ballet Theatre as a Soloist in March 1979. \u00a0He was appointed a Principal Dancer the following December and danced with the company until 1991.\u00a0McKenzie, 68, was appointed ABT\u2019s Artistic Director in October 1992.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

American Ballet Theatre has a long, storied history of producing several critically acclaimed productions of this annual family-friendly classic tale of Clara and the Nutcracker over the years.\u00a0The Nutcracker<\/em>, with its timeless music by Tchaikovsky and splendid costumes and scenery, is the perfect way to introduce children to ballet and even inspire them to study dance and become a little Clara or Nutcracker Prince. This production, with choreography by Alexei Ratmansky, scenery and costumes by Tony Award\u00ae-winner Richard Hudson (Disney\u2019s\u00a0The Lion King<\/em>), and lighting by Tony Award\u00ae-winner Jennifer Tipton, received its World Premiere in 2010.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Los Angeles Times<\/em>\u00a0said, \u201cChoreographer Alexei Ratmansky has made his own Christmas miracle: a joyful \u201cNutcracker\u201d ballet that is ravishing and clever enough to inspire multiple viewings \u2026 in \u2018Waltz of the Flowers,\u2019 Busby Berkeley-esque waves of complex human patterns make this waltz one of the most astounding and beautiful you\u2019ll ever see \u2026 in all its wondrousness, an unreserved classic.\u201d<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Orange County Register<\/em>\u00a0said, \u201cA visual tour de force \u2026 a\u00a0Nutcracker\u00a0<\/em>without parallel \u2026 Ratmansky is an undisputed master; few choreographers combine his qualities of invention, wit, pacing, and theatricality \u2026 Ratmansky has created a work that celebrates the wonder and transformative power of live performance.\u201d<\/p>\n

The ABT William J. Gillespie School\u00a0offers students unrivaled performing opportunities, Master Classes, lectures by visiting artists, and the highest quality of classical ballet training through the American Ballet Theatre National Training Curriculum. Forty students are featured annually in ABT\u2019s production of\u00a0The Nutcracker<\/em>; and students have performed alongside ABT dancers in the World Premiere productions of\u00a0<\/strong>The Sleeping Beauty<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>(2015),\u00a0Whipped Cream<\/em>\u00a0(2017),\u00a0<\/strong>and the West Coast premiere of ABT\u2019s\u00a0Harlequinade<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>(2019).<\/p>\n

From March 29 to April 2, 2023, American Ballet Theatre will give the North American Premiere of\u00a0Like Water for Chocolate<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0at the Center. From the award-winning team of choreographer Christopher Wheeldon and composer Joby Talbot, with costumes by Bob Crowley, this co-production with the Royal Ballet is inspired by Laura Esquivel\u2019s bestselling novel of the same name.\u00a0Wheeldon and his team have turned \u201cLatin-American magical realism into a fluid, clear, and cohesive dance narrative\u201d (Culture Whisper).<\/p>\n
