Officials from the\u00a0United States and\u00a0the\u00a0Republic of Korea\u00a0(ROK)\u00a0met in Seoul on December 15\u00a0and 16\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0third U.S.-Republic of Korea Civil Space Dialogue.\u00a0\u00a0Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary\u00a0of the\u00a0Bureau of\u00a0Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs\u00a0Jennifer R. Littlejohn\u00a0led an interagency\u00a0U.S.\u00a0delegation.\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0ROK\u00a0delegation was\u00a0jointly led by Kwon Hyun-joon, Director General for Space and Nuclear Energy Bureau at the Ministry of Science and ICT\u00a0(MSIT),\u00a0and Yun\u00a0Hyun-soo, Director-General for Bureau of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Scientific Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs\u00a0(MOFA).<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Dialogue was first announced in a\u00a0joint statement by\u00a0U.S.\u00a0President Joe Biden and\u00a0President Yoon Suk\u00a0Yeol\u00a0of the Republic of Korea\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0during a\u00a0May 2022 visit to Seoul.\u00a0\u00a0The two leaders\u00a0committed to strengthen the\u00a0U.S.-ROK\u00a0Alliance across all sectors of space cooperation,\u00a0including joint research\u00a0in space exploration.\u00a0\u00a0This commitment was reaffirmed during\u00a0Vice President Kamala Harris\u2019 visit to Seoul\u00a0<\/a>in September\u00a02022, where she and\u00a0President Yoon\u00a0discussed the\u00a0ROK\u2019s decision to join\u00a0the\u00a0United States\u00a0in\u00a0committing\u00a0to\u00a0not\u00a0conduct destructive direct-ascent anti-satellite missile testing.\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0ROK\u00a0also\u00a0signed\u00a0the Artemis Accords\u00a0in 2021, affirming its commitment to the responsible and sustainable use and exploration of space and\u00a0facilitating\u00a0further cooperation with United States\u2019\u00a0space activities.\u00a0\u00a0The new year,\u00a02023,\u00a0will mark\u00a0the 70th\u00a0anniversary of the U.S.-ROK Alliance.\u00a0\u00a0Both nations\u00a0look forward to strengthening the\u00a0Alliance and further expanding our bilateral space cooperation.<\/p>\n

Space officials for the\u00a0United States\u00a0and the ROK discussed many aspects of bilateral space cooperation,\u00a0including\u00a0the sustainable use of outer space, space policy and governance, commercial space activities,\u00a0space technology,\u00a0satellite\u00a0navigation systems\u00a0and\u00a0Earth observation.\u00a0\u00a0Officials also discussed cooperation in space exploration and science,\u00a0including through the Artemis program, International Space\u00a0Station\u00a0and Commercial Lunar Payload Services, as well as space activities focused on civil\u00a0Maritime\u00a0Domain\u00a0Awareness.\u00a0\u00a0Participants\u00a0also\u00a0agreed to hold\u00a0conversations on\u00a0commercial cooperation,\u00a0as part\u00a0of\u00a0the continuing Dialogue\u00a0in\u00a0the next year.<\/p>\n

The U.S. delegation included representatives from the Department of State, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Federal Aviation Administration, the Department of Commerce, the Naval Research Lab, the National Maritime Intelligence Integration Office, and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).\u00a0\u00a0The ROK delegation included representatives from MSIT, MOFA, the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy, the Korea Coast Guard, the Korea Meteorological Administration, the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency, and the National Institute of Environmental Research.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
